New study shows extent of Canadian Arctic melt

Ice caps on Canada's largest island will vanish by the middle of the century, new research says, which shows that warming temperatures have reduced Baffin Island's ice caps by half since 1950.

Radiocarbon dating shows ice caps on Baffin Island, which lies west of Greenland, are now smaller in area than at any time in at least the
last 1,600 years.

"Even with no additional warming, our study indicates these ice caps will be gone in 50 years or less," geological sciences professor
Gifford Miller, of Colorado University Boulder’s Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, was quoted as saying.
