Today, engineers are working on large-scale batteries that can be integrated into the power grid to store energy from clean sources like solar or wind. Battery powered cars and <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/energy\/electric-three-wheelers-two-wheelers-driving-indias-electric-vehicle-transition\/\">scooters<\/a> are also becoming increasingly popular in India, as a way of reducing both carbon emissions and air pollution in cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-batteries-important-for-india-s-energy-transition\">Why are batteries important for India&#8217;s energy transition?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Batteries are essential for an energy grid powered by renewable energy. This is because many renewable energy sources need certain conditions to produce power \u2013 a solar panel will generate electricity only when the sun is shining, and a wind turbine needs strong winds to operate. Renewable energy sources may also produce lots of electricity when demand is low, for example during the day when there\u2019s less need for electricity to power lights at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20072712\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Batteries allow this excess energy to be stored and released onto the grid at the right time, when consumers need it. This is called battery-based energy storage (BBES).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, grid operators in India have relied on coal \u2013 the most polluting fossil fuel \u2013 which can be burned to dispatch the exact amount of electricity needed at a given time. Using batteries to store energy produced from renewables like wind and solar can recreate this ability to balance supply and demand on the grid, removing a major barrier to moving away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-role-do-batteries-currently-play-in-powering-india-s-energy-grid\">What role do batteries currently play in powering India\u2019s energy grid?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2019s current grid-connected battery storage capacity is essentially negligible. Installation of battery-based electricity storage has so far been limited to small-scale projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2019s first grid-scale battery storage system \u2013 a 10 MW system in Delhi \u2013 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyforum.in\/home\/april-2019-newsletter-articles\/fluence-energy-inaugurates-indias-first-grid-scale-10mw10mwh-battery-energy-storage-project\/#:~:text=energy%20storage%20project-,Fluence%20Energy%20inaugurates%20India's%20first%20grid%2Dscale%2010MW%2F10MWH%20battery,for%20India's%20entire%20energy%20sector.\">launched<\/a> in 2019. Then in 2021, a <a href=\"https:\/\/mercomindia.com\/tata-power-nexcharge-battery-community-energy-storage\/\">150 KW battery installation<\/a> in Delhi was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy-storage.news\/indias-first-grid-connected-community-energy-storage-system-inaugurated-in-delhi\/\">hailed<\/a> as \u201cIndia\u2019s first grid-connected community energy storage system\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-battery-capacity-does-india-need-to-achieve-its-energy-transition-goals\">How much battery capacity does India need to achieve its energy transition goals?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/tag\/cop26\/\">COP26<\/a> in Glasgow in November 2021, India&#8217;s Prime Minister Narendra Modi <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/beyond-net-zero-2070-india-climate-pledges-explained\/\">pledged<\/a> to increase India\u2019s energy production capacity from non-fossil fuels to 500 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. This would be a significant increase from around 160 GW today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20080654\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cea.nic.in\/old\/reports\/others\/planning\/irp\/Optimal_mix_report_2029-30_FINAL.pdf\">Modelling<\/a> by India\u2019s Central Electricity Authority (CEA) concluded that to support the deployment and integration of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity, 27 GW or 108 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery capacity will be needed in India by the year 2029-2030. A gigawatt-hour is a measure of how much power can be released in a certain amount of time, whereas a gigawatt is a measure of how much power can be produced at a peak time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-will-india-increase-use-of-batteries-on-its-power-grid\">How will India increase use of batteries on its power grid?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India is planning to ramp up battery production to support its decarbonisation goals. The government has rolled out a <a href=\"https:\/\/cleartax.in\/g\/terms\/pli-scheme#:~:text=PLI%20Scheme%2C%20as%20the%20Production,production%20to%20create%20micro%20jobs.\">Production Linked Incentive (PLI)<\/a> scheme which rewards local manufacturers for growing battery sales. It hopes to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1790139\">50 GWh<\/a> of cumulative battery capacity within the next few years. However, this is still a long way away from what India needs to support its energy transition targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-challenges-to-battery-adoption-in-india\">What are the challenges to battery adoption in India?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India is yet to develop manufacturing of batteries at the scale that would be used by the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Battery prices have decreased significantly over the past few years, but they remain too high to be deployed at the scale required for India\u2019s energy transition. Currently, an average battery pack to fit on an electric car would cost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/auto\/faqs-on-ev-batteries-how-long-they-last-warranty-replacement-and-more-12838052.htm\">between USD 7,000 and 10,000<\/a> in India. The technology currently in use is the same, although a battery designed for cars and one meant to store power for the grid would ideally need a different energy to power ratio (the amount of energy the battery can discharge in a certain amount of time). Despite these differences, engineers say that as demand for electric cars expands, prices will decrease and eventually this will benefit the power sector too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-materials-are-needed-to-produce-batteries\">What materials are needed to produce batteries?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The key minerals used to build batteries by current technologies are lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, graphite, iron, and titanium. As the battery industry grows, a small group of countries with significant mineral reserves controls the global supply chains. In 2020, Australia produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/our-natural-resources\/minerals-mining\/minerals-metals-facts\/lithium-facts\/24009\">nearly half of the world\u2019s lithium<\/a>, while Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Afghanistan have the largest estimated deposits. Half of the world\u2019s resources of cobalt are located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which accounts for 70% of the mineral\u2019s global production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists are now exploring alternative battery materials such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/12\/211206220020.htm\">salt<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41557-018-0019-6\">magnesium<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-30\/iron-battery-breakthrough-could-eat-lithium-s-lunch?sref=oUjKJw8m#xj4y7vzkg\">iron<\/a> and even <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/adfm.202001249\">seawater<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As India moves away from fossil fuels and increases
