{"id":106985,"date":"2023-07-06T10:55:40","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T10:55:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chinadialogue.net\/?post_type=news_digest&#038;p=106985"},"modified":"2024-04-16T10:33:50","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T10:33:50","slug":"wild-boar-loses-protections","status":"publish","type":"news_digest","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/digest\/wild-boar-loses-protections\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild boar loses protections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestry.gov.cn\/u\/cms\/www\/202306\/3016360986k1.pdf\">list<\/a> of land animals protected because they have \u201csignificant ecological, scientific, and social value\u201d omits wild boar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Species on the \u201cthree-haves\u201d list, published on 30th June by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA), cannot be hunted, traded or transported without permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was the first update to the list since it was created in 2000. At that point, it contained 1,591 species, while the new version has 1,924. Given the NFGA\u2019s statement that \u201cover 700 species\u201d have been added \u2013 including muntjac and paradise flycatcher \u2013 about 370 must have been removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding wild boar, Jin Kun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Forestry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.21jingji.com\/article\/20230703\/herald\/bcc8af560c4341ad8a5725b02fc9498f.html\">said<\/a> there is no longer a threat to their survival, and populations in many areas are too high. \u201cThe removal is in line with the basic principles of adjustment,\u201d Jin added.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sun Quanhui, senior scientific advisor for World Animal Protection, <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/hVNLVn71IpF9H13bDuRd-A\">said<\/a> the scarcity of predators such as tigers, leopards, wolves and jackals was a major reason for the rapid growth of wild boar populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given increased conflicts between people and wild boar, in 2021 the NFGA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.cn\/xinwen\/2021-12\/01\/content_5655227.htm\">implemented pilot projects<\/a> across China to control hazards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the wild boar has been removed from the \u201cthree-haves\u201d list, hunting can take place in areas where the animal is deemed too numerous with no need for a licence and no quota on kills, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/CnDlV5j1Ma97KiUkTDbDhA\">CCTV News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The omission of the boar has caused controversy since a draft of the list was released in 2021. Conservationists worry that hunting will have ripple effects on other wild animals, as China Dialogue has <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/digest\/wild-boar-removed-from-draft-protection-list-sparking-controversy-2\/\">reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jin told <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/CnDlV5j1Ma97KiUkTDbDhA\">CCTV News<\/a> that the delisting does not mean wild boars can be killed at will. Prohibited hunting areas, periods, tools and methods still apply, as do national gun management rules, Jin added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liu Bingwan, associate professor at Northeast Forestry University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinanews.com.cn\/sh\/2021\/10-18\/9588760.shtml\">believes<\/a> that China lacks systematic wild boar research: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know the number of wild boars. How much hunting should be done to be ecologically appropriate?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sun <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/hVNLVn71IpF9H13bDuRd-A\">added<\/a> that it is essential to rely on scientific assessments rather than conflicts with humans to determine whether wild boar numbers in a given area are excessive.
