But the arrival this month of the Istanbul Bridge was special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 13 October, the container ship docked at the port after a pioneering 20-day journey from China. It had eschewed the usual maritime Silk Road to Europe around India and through the Mediterranean in favour of an Arctic voyage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe navigate this route with a deep sense of respect and caution,\u201d the vessel\u2019s captain Zhong Desheng <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20251014\/db56a0785f0e46aab5fde7c5ca043d5b\/c.html\">told Xinhua<\/a>, China\u2019s state press agency. \u201cThere\u2019s a certain pressure that comes with the great responsibility we carry, but with thorough preparation and strong support, we\u2019re fully confident in completing the voyage safely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sea Legend Shipping arranged the voyage. The company\u2019s chief operating officer, Li Xiaobin, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202510\/1346110.shtml\">Global Times<\/a> that he hopes to run the route weekly or biweekly during the summer. Ice-hardened vessels could be used in the future to allow year-round voyages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Li said the ship was mainly carrying China\u2019s current big three exports: electric vehicles, lithium batteries and solar panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the world\u2019s first container route through the Arctic specifically designed for cross-border e-commerce and high-value-added goods. It is also a major achievement in the development of the \u2018Ice Silk Road\u2019 under the Belt and Road Initiative,\u201d said an official from China\u2019s Ministry of Transport (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.people.cn\/n3\/2025\/1021\/c90000-20379652.html\">People\u2019s Daily<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global shipping and trade is increasingly politicised, especially for green transition products such as batteries and solar panels, which have become subject to tit-for-tat trade wars. Russia has long been interested in seeing more cargo flow along its northern border, while China has taken an increasingly active role in Arctic affairs as it asserts itself as a global power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, China published an Arctic strategy white paper that included supporting the development of a polar Silk Road. It <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2018-01\/26\/c_136926357.htm\">included<\/a>: \u201cChina, as a responsible major country, is ready to cooperate with all relevant parties to seize the historic opportunity in the development of the Arctic, to address the challenges brought by the changes in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Istanbul Bridge\u2019s 20 day voyage from Ningbo-Zhoushan to Felixstowe was 5 days shorter than the equivalent rail journey. According to Xinhua, the traditional maritime route via the Suez canal takes 40 days, while another alternative around the tip of Africa and up the Atlantic takes even longer. The Centre for High North Logistics <a href=\"https:\/\/chnl.no\/news\/container-ship-istanbul-bridge-on-international-transit-voyage-via-the-nsr\/\">thinks<\/a> the Suez route would only take 27 days if ships omitted their usual stops along the way \u2013 which do not exist along the Arctic route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/maritime-executive.com\/article\/sea-legend-s-new-china-europe-arctic-shipping-service-draws-scrutiny\">Maritime Executive reports<\/a>, voyages along this Arctic passage \u2013 sometimes called the Northern Sea Route (NSR) \u2013 traditionally require a Russian icebreaker to safely lead the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the NSR is shorter, it could bring benefits in reduced carbon emissions from shipping. Not everyone has been celebrating, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sian Prior, a marine science and policy specialist, and lead adviser of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanarctic.org\/2025\/08\/19\/clean-arctic-alliance-response-to-chinas-new-containership-route-through-arctic\/\">Clean Arctic Alliance<\/a>, expressed concerns about the fuel being used by the Istanbul Bridge for the journey. The Clean Arctic Alliance is campaigning for ships in the area to reduce their \u201cblack carbon\u201d emissions. It argues that the black particles emitted by ships burning heavy fuel oil cause <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanarctic.org\/campaigns\/the-arctic-climate-crisis\/black-carbon-in-the-arctic\/\">significant global warming<\/a> when they settle on white snow and ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough shipping operators may argue that a shorter route \u2013 via the Arctic \u2013 will result in lower CO2 emissions, the Arctic has been largely undeveloped in terms of transit shipping, due to the risks posed by sea ice, and the waters are poorly charted,\u201d says Prior. \u201cCO2 reductions will be meaningless if shipping in the Arctic results in higher emissions of super pollutant black carbon, which has a 1,600 times greater climate impact than CO2 on a 20 year basis, and a disproportionate impact when emitted near to snow and ice.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ksenia Vakhrusheva, of Norwegian environmental group the Bellona Foundation, told <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.co.uk\/news\/national\/article\/a-perilous-new-sea-route-opens-from-china-to-suffolk-across-the-arctic\">The Observer<\/a>: \u201cThe Russian narrative that the NSR is a quicker, cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative to the Suez canal is false.
