After Xi Jinping and Donald Trump met in Beijing last week, the White House stated<\/a> that China will import at least 10 million tonnes of American coal in 2027 and the same again in 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the sole energy-related deliverable to emerge from the meeting between the two presidents. China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce said<\/a> the imports would offer “a useful supplement to China\u2019s domestic market and stable income and jobs for the US coal industry.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the deal is relatively small scale. China imported<\/a> 490 million tonnes of coal in 2025, according to China Coal Market. Imports from the US totalled<\/a> about 12 million tonnes in 2024 (2% of total imports)\u00a0before dropping to zero after May 2025 due to trade friction, stated China Coal Resource Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The renewed imports will be dominated<\/a> by coking coal, according to Shipping Information Online. Ten million tonnes would account for less than 10% of its coking coal imports, having a limited impact on the country\u2019s coal import landscape, the outlet added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zhang Shuwei, the chief economist at Draworld Environment Research Center (Beijing), noted<\/a> that the import quota is a pittance for China, serving more as a \u201cgift for a handful of Appalachian miners,” the group that the US administration already treats \u201cas a constituency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China has long been the world’s largest importer and consumer of coal. Its coal consumption will reach a peak around 2028, the China National Coal Association announced<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
