This is Xi\u2019s first visit to the site, known as the \u201cGreen Lung of North China\u201d, since his 2017 instruction on \u201clearning the spirit of Saihanba\u201d which elevated the park to a national ecological symbol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the 1960s, Saihanba was a major source of sandstorms that affected Beijing, since decades of deforestation, starting from the late Qing Dynasty, had devastated the pine forest there. Reforestation efforts began in 1962. According to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinatoday.com.cn\/chinese\/economy\/ls\/201801\/t20180116_800114548.html\">one history<\/a>, it took almost 60 years of trial and error and three generations of afforestation workers to build Saihanba into the world\u2019s largest planted forest, with forest coverage recovering from 12% to 80%. The project was awarded the UN\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/championsofearth\/laureates\/2017\/saihanba-afforestation-community\">Champions of Earth<\/a>&nbsp;award in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Xi\u2019s visit, he instructed park administrators to \u201csafeguard the fruit of a half-century\u2019s reforestation efforts\u201d and \u201cbalance the need for fire prevention and tourism development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bandao.cn\/a\/538632.html\">Chinese media<\/a>, Xi\u2019s latest visit signals the central place of tree planting in China\u2019s construction of \u201cecological civilisation.\u201d Since 2018, he has made at least half a dozen visits to forest reserves and tree planting sites to emphasise the need to preserve China\u2019s ecological assets, forests, lakes, rivers and grasslands. In China\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/zh\/4\/70532\/\">14th Five Year Plan<\/a>, published earlier this year, the central government sets a target to further increase forest coverage to 24.1% by 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While large-scale afforestation has significantly greened China\u2019s landscapes, there are concerns over monoculture and the ecological impacts of chosen tree species.
