He fishes from the Sundarijal to Gokarna segments of the river just north of the city, stretches that are still somewhat clean. Below Gokarna, the Bagmati \u2013 which flows through the heart of Nepal&#8217;s capital \u2013 is so polluted it&#8217;s almost<a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/2017\/11\/21\/can-dams-help-save-kathmandus-shrinking-bagmati-river\/\">\u00a0&#8220;dead&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But even in the &#8220;clean&#8221; areas\u00a0of the river he finds his net is full of plastic bags, not fish.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_24314\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24314\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24314\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/plastic-16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"680\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prem Rai removes plastic from his fishing net that was caught during fishing in Bagmati River near Gokarna in Kathmandu. Every saturday he goes to fish in Bagmati river from Gokarna to Sundarijal where Bagmati is a bit clean [image by: Nabin Baral]<\/figcaption><\/figure>With a population of\u00a0about 2.5 million (including the districts of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur) the Kathmandu Valley produces 523 tonnes of waste per day, out of which 12% is estimated to be plastic. Due to the lack of awareness and a dysfunctional waste management system some of the plastic and polythene bags are thrown into, or dumped on the banks of the the rivers and rivulets that run through the valley, and finally end up in the Bagmati River \u2013 considered Nepal&#8217;s holiest river but is heavily polluted.<\/p>\n<p>Due to easy availability plastic and polythene bags have\u00a0become integrated into\u00a0daily life for people\u00a0in the Kathmandu valley, replacing older biodegradable material used for bags or packing material. Even outside the city, plastic proliferates. Kathmandu,\u00a0located in the foothills of the Himalayas,\u00a0is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the world. But when people go out to enjoy the beauty, they leave their plastic behind.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_24315\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24315\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24315\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/plastic-19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"680\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abhisekh Pokhrel removes polythene bag stuck on a wild rose growing on the bank of one of the Rivulet of Bagmati River in Kathmandu [image by: Nabin Baral]<\/figcaption><\/figure>Abhisekh Pokhrel, part of\u00a0a &#8220;No Polythene Bag&#8221; campaign, claimed that he had stopped using plastic bags completely and is urging others in the city to do the same. Before a lackadaisical government, and an uncaring public, the river cleaning campaigns \u2013 usually carried out on Saturdays \u2013 are not able to do much.
