Local newspapers provide prominent coverage to one tannery being fined a heavy amount for allegedly continuing with its operations during the January-March Kumbh Mela in downstream Prayagraj despite a closure order from the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board. But no one seems bothered that it\u2019s back to pollution-as-usual.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27169\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27169\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27169\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Kanpur_Tannery_Ganga_Pollution_Jajmau_Bridge_Joydeep_17April2019_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Untreated tannery waste and sewage flow down to the Ganga right on the edge of Jajmau bridge, used by thousands of vehicles every day to move between the cities of Kanpur and Lucknow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It is not as if no attempt is being made to control the highly toxic tannery waste, at least if you go by the large number of signboards put up on the repeatedly dug main road of Jajmau.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27170\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27170\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27170\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Kanpur_Tannery_Jajmau_Namami_Gange_Drainage_Work_Joydeep_17April2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The signboards are usually larger than the holes dug on the main road of Jajmau in an effort to unclog the drains below; these drains carry a combination of tannery waste and sewage to the Ganga, barely 100 metres away<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Sangam (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers) at Prayagraj (earlier called Allahabad) was the centre of attention during the Kumbh Mela from January to March this year. But now, in the third week of April, it is time to finish dismantling the gigantic tent city built on the riverbed and along the banks. And the water level is down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is not even enough flow to wash away the garlands that devotees throw from the banks,\u201d says Gagan Chand, a milkman who comes to the spot for a bath every day. \u201cWe do tell the devotees not to throw anything into the river; we especially tell them not to throw plastic packets. But they don\u2019t listen. Sometimes they get aggressive and threaten to beat us up. How many people can we fight every day?\u201d A priest sitting on the riverbank nods in agreement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27171\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27171\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27171\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Sangam_Prayagraj_Post_Kumbh_pollution_lack_of_water_Joydeep_18April2019_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the Sangam in Prayagraj, where thousands bathed every day during the January-March Kumbh Mela and millions on the more auspicious days, there is now not enough water to move the garlands thrown in by devotees<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is quite a crowd at Varanasi\u2019s Assi Ghat to watch the sunrise over the Ganga. Some jump on moored boats and go to the prow to click selfies. If they looked down, they would see floating sewage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27172\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27172\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27172\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Muck_on_oar_garbage_on_bank_Ganga_Varanasi_Joydeep_19April2019_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the waist-deep Ganga water about ten metres from the Varanasi shore, the boatman\u2019s oar repeatedly brings up garbage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The outgoing government\u2019s Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission has placed great emphasis on ending open defecation. As Varanasi is the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, thousands of toilets have been built in the city. Modi had started his 2014 election campaign there by vowing to clean the Ganga. Nevertheless open defecation continues along the banks of the holy river.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27173\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27173\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Smartphone_and_Open_defecation_Ganga_Varanasi_Joydeep_19April2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A man uses his smartphone while defecating in the open, on the Varanasi bank of the Ganga &#8211; which is located between some of the bathing places considered holiest by Hindus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Varanasi takes its name from Varuna and Assi, two small rivers that join the Ganga as it flows along the city. Both are effectively drains now. The Assi is even called a nullah (drain) by locals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27174\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27174\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27174\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Assi_Nullah_joining_Ganga_close-up_Joydeep_19April2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Assi Nullah as it joins the Ganga, despite repeated claims by the authorities that sewage treatment plants along the Assi are working well<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The effect of the Assi Nullah is clear. It carries sewage into the Ganga, which floats past thousands of devotees bathing in the holy river every morning, the hundreds of boats moored along the river, even an anchored cruise liner that made the trip upriver from Kolkata.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27175\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27175\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27175\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Assi_Nullah_joining_Ganga_Joydeep_19April2019_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pigs feast along the bank as the Assi Nullah discharges untreated effluents into the Ganga<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>None of this appears to diminish the ardour of the Hindu pilgrims, who gather in thousands to watch the aarti (worship) of \u201cMother Ganga\u201d every evening.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27176\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27176\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27176\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ganga_Aarti_Assi_Ghat_Varanasi_Joydeep_19April2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ganga aarti at Assi Ghat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The state of the Ganga is directly related to the condition of its tributaries. In state capital Lucknow, the capital of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, thousands of commuters travel over the Gomti \u2013 one of the largest tributaries of the Ganga \u2013 every day, ignoring the drain that flows alongside their vehicles, from very close to the state government secretariat to the Gomti, and discharges untreated effluent into the river all the time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27177\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27177\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27177\" the time<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The clearly visible pollutants are apparently ignored by the many who take a stroll just downstream, while young couples click selfies in the ornamental park along
