{"id":36594,"date":"2019-10-22T09:29:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T09:29:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-06-11T09:48:31","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T09:48:31","slug":"11594-chinese-photographer-wins-major-prize","status":"publish","type":"photo_story","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/nature\/11594-chinese-photographer-wins-major-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese photographer wins major prize"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With his&nbsp;image of a marmot being attacked by a Tibetan fox,&nbsp;Bao Yongqing&nbsp;has won the prestigious&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/visit\/wpy.html\">Wildlife Photographer of the Year<\/a>&nbsp;competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sir Michael Dixon, director of London\u2019s&nbsp;Natural History Museum, which runs the competition, said the winning image \u201ccaptures nature\u2019s ultimate challenge \u2013 its battle for survival\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chair of the judging panel, Roz Kidman Cox, said: \u201cImages from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau are rare enough, but to have captured such a powerful interaction between a Tibetan fox and a marmot \u2013 two species key to the ecology of this high-grassland region \u2013 is extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bao Yongqing is a wildlife photographer from Qinghai province. He\u2019s a trained ecologist and director of the Qilian Mountains Nature Conservation Association of China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Qinghai-Tibet plateau is an important source of fresh water for Asia and rich in biodiversity. But the region is particularly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadialogue.net\/blog\/7422-Tibetan-plateau-faces-massive-ecosystem-shift-\/en\">vulnerable to climate change<\/a>&nbsp;resulting in the melting of snow and glaciers, deterioration of wetlands and loss of permafrost, putting pressure on habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another photograph of Qinghai-Tibet also picked up a prize in the competition. Fan Shangzhen\u2019s image of a small herd of male chiru (Tibetan antelope) in the Altun Shan National Nature Reserve won in the \u201cAnimals in their environment\u201d category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winners of the competition were announced on 15 October in London. Now in its 55<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;year, the competition received 48,000 entries from photographers across 100 countries. The marmot was hungry. It was still in its winter coat and not long out of its six-month hibernation deep underground with the rest of its colony of 30 or so. The marmot had ventured out of its burrow to search for plants to graze on when the fox rushed forward, her long canines revealed. A million chiru once ranged across this vast plateau, but commercial hunting in the 1980s and 1990s left only about 70,000 individuals. This tiny, protected coastal zone is the only place in the world where natural conditions combine to conjure this magical scene. The spongy orange cladding is a mass of green algae spectacularly coloured by carotenoid pigments, which depend on the Monterey cypress for physical support but photosynthesize their own food.
