It is home to diverse marine animals, from amphibious mudskipper fish to endangered sea turtles. And, according to Unesco, it is a crucial \u201ccustodian\u201d of the world\u2019s blue carbon assets, meaning&nbsp;it hosts ecosystems with an exceptional ability to sequester carbon and help mitigate climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as a natural reserve protected by a Mauritanian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/faolex\/results\/details\/en\/c\/LEX-FAOC170207\/\">special law<\/a>, &nbsp;Banc d\u2019Arguin can\u2019t be spared from threats faced by the global ocean as a whole. It boasts a mosaic of features from both environments, including windblown sand dunes and banks, coastal swamps, marshes and tidal mudflats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El-Hacen Mohamed El-Hacen, a conservationist with the national park, says its uniqueness also lies in the shallowness of the waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its submarine tidal bank \u2013 usually less than five metres deep and extending 80km from the shoreline \u2013 teems with life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nesting birds, migratory waders and juvenile fish all find the tidal area an ideal habitat to feed or breed, says Mohamed El-Hacen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are only very few places that have shallow waters in the whole of West Africa,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt provides services to biodiversity that no other places can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Endangered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/4615\/11037468\">green sea turtles<\/a>, as well as monk seals, bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic humpbacked Seagrass, for instance, can lock carbon into the seabed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4633871\/\">35<\/a> times faster than tropical rainforests. According to a Unesco <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/blue-carbon-report\/\">report<\/a> published last year, those seagrass beds hold 109 million tonnes of carbon. This is equivalent to the average emissions of 97 coal-fired power plants in one year, based on the US Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s greenhouse gas equivalencies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/energy\/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator\">calculator<\/a>. Unesco has ranked the park as the third-largest blue carbon sink among all the world heritage sites, below only the Everglades National Park and the Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yarba Ahmed Mahmoud notes that the park\u2019s blue carbon value is even larger than Unesco\u2019s estimation. He says the assessment only evaluated the carbon sequestration by seagrasses, overlooking the value of extensive bare mudflats. These animals can contribute to carbon sequestration too, Yarba Ahmed Mahmoud says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"40077158\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.abb4848\">research<\/a> shows that large marine mammals capture and store carbon in their enormous bodies over their lifetime. When they die, this carbon then sinks with their carcasses to the bottom of the ocean, where it may remain for centuries. In this way, an adult whale sequesters an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/Publications\/fandd\/issues\/2019\/12\/natures-solution-to-climate-change-chami\">33 tonnes<\/a> of carbon dioxide, the IMF estimates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A park under threat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Banc d\u2019Arguin\u2019s flourishing ecosystems and abundant natural resources have caught the attention of industrial fishing fleets and oil and gas companies. Their operations in the region are putting pressure on the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IUCN rated the park\u2019s conservation outlook as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org\/explore-sites\/wdpaid\/20388\">significant concern<\/a>\u201d in 2020, stating its value was deteriorating due to threats, including overfishing, oil and gas exploration, and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome threats are coming from the outside,\u201d Yarba Ahmed Mahmoud says. \u201cThere are a lot of motorised boats that fish in the vicinity. And they all want to go inside the park. But the IUCN\u2019s 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org\/explore-sites\/wdpaid\/20388\">assessment<\/a> said that in recent years, an increase in international fishing fleets operating in waters close to the park has added pressure on its marine ecosystem and reduced the catch of Imraguen communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the park, artisanal fishing has become increasingly commercialised, with Imraguen fishers increasing their catches and targeting lucrative species such as sharks and rays. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2003, the park authorities reached an <a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/wwf_news\/?11278\/Ray-and-shark-fishing-to-stop-in-Mauritanian-national-park\">agreement<\/a> with the Imraguen to halt the targeted fishing of sharks and rays and stop the use of nets designed for these species. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Yarba Ahmed Mahmoud says that the park has yet to successfully avert illegal fishing within its jurisdiction due to the demands for these species from African and Asian markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk of a potential oil spill has also caused unease among conservationists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oil and gas exploration and exploitation are banned within the park and a 5km buffer zone around it. However, the Mauritanian government has granted concessions near the park, and offshore exploitation has been going on in the country since 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuddenly, the park was in the middle of these gas extractions,\u201d Yarba Ahmed Mahmoud says. \u201cThere are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/media\/news-and-media-releases\/2018\/shell-secures-exploration-acreage-offshore-mauritania.html\">Shell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/totalenergies.com\/media\/news\/press-releases\/mauritania-total-expands-exploration-activities-country-new-deep-offshore-license\">Total <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capricornenergy.com\/operations\/mauritania\/\">Capricorn.<\/a> All these companies are now in the area. The rising seawater has already gained ground and changed the park\u2019s coastline. A <a href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1002\/ecs2.3364\">study<\/a> in 2021, co-authored by Mohamed El-Hacen, estimated that 83% of the park\u2019s \u201cpopulated coastline\u201d is exposed to \u201ca moderate to high risk of flooding and erosion\u201d, and local fishing villages might face the possibility of displacement in the wake of hazards such as storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohamed El-Hacen says the park provides so many irreplaceable services to the natural world that it cannot be left alone to tackle these challenges, especially the cross-regional issues of climate change and illegal trade of sharks and rays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe pressure is high. The stakes [are] high,\u201d says Mohamed El-Hacen. \u201cFor the park to fulfil its roles, it [will] take a lot of international cooperation to mitigate and prevent the place from being
