Rivers take on unique contours, etching a course and leaving their fingerprints on a forest where many indigenous and riverside communities live among rich vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other side, square parcels of land are carved from the greenery for industrial agriculture, mining operations slash through the forest like scars, miles at a time, while vast herds of cattle speckle the cleared land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seen from the sky, a series of fires is quickly turning vast green areas into ashes. Ecosystem preservation is essential for controlling global warming and storing carbon (Image: Fl\u00e1via Milhorance \/ Di\u00e1logo Chino)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC05387-scaled.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"322 KB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1333\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2000\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent months, this advance has become increasingly conspicuous to those who follow the changes in the Amazon from above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe that the upcoming elections, and the lack of certainty over who will be the new president next year, has motivated a rush to destroy the forest,\u201d said Roni Lira, an activist who has been monitoring the biome from the air for more than two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 26 August, Di\u00e1logo Chino accompanied ClimaInfo on a flight over several rapidly advancing deforestation zones in the northern Brazilian state of Par\u00e1: the municipalities of Santar\u00e9m, Belterra, Trair\u00e3o, Itaituba and Jacareacanga. (Image: Fl\u00e1via Milhorance \/ Di\u00e1logo Chino)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Desmatamento-floresta-amazonica-amazonia-flavia-milhorance-dialogo-chino-scaled.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"517 KB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1333\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2000\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe president, since his speeches pre-election [in 2018], has signalled his encouragement for the devastation of the Amazon for the sake of a \u2018development\u2019 that we are yet to see,\u201d said Lira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lira added that, in addition to bellicose rhetoric against the protection of the Amazon and traditional peoples, President Jair Bolsonaro has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oc.eco.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/A-conta-chegou-HD.pdf\">removed officials<\/a>&nbsp;who investigated environmental crimes, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/epocanegocios.globo.com\/Um-So-Planeta\/noticia\/2022\/01\/bolsonaro-corta-r-86-mi-de-controle-de-incendios-florestais-em-orcamento.html\">reduced the budget<\/a>&nbsp;of the country\u2019s environment ministry \u2013 most notably in the control of fires by IBAMA, the ministry\u2019s inspection and enforcement body. Fires tend to multiply after mid-May, when the rainy season comes to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between May and August this year, a total of 44,338 fire alerts had already been registered in the Amazon, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/queimadas.dgi.inpe.br\/queimadas\/portal-static\/estatisticas_estados\/\">data<\/a>&nbsp;from INPE, Brazil\u2019s national space and atmospheric science institute. This number is the highest for this three-month period during the Bolsonaro administration, with the figure more than double the total alerts in 2018, the year before his inauguration. This August saw&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/g1.globo.com\/meio-ambiente\/noticia\/2022\/09\/01\/amazonia-tem-pior-agosto-de-queimadas-dos-ultimos-12-anos.ghtml\">the highest<\/a>&nbsp;number of fires recorded for the month in the past 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deforestation also continues to break records, according to INPE&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/terrabrasilis.dpi.inpe.br\/app\/dashboard\/deforestation\/biomes\/legal_amazon\/rates\">data<\/a>. Estimated annual deforestation jumped from 7,500 km2 in 2018 to 13,000 km2 in 2021 \u2013 the largest area deforested in one year since 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"flourish-embed-iframe\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px;\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/11071455\/embed\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Legislation determines that rural landowners in the Brazilian Amazon must protect 80% of native vegetation within their farms, the so-called \u201clegal reserve\u201d. Passing through both states is the BR-163 highway, a road whose construction began in the 1970s, but whose&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/politica.estadao.com.br\/blogs\/estadao-verifica\/comprovado-trecho-da-br-163-foi-asfaltado-no-governo-bolsonaro\/\">paving was only completed<\/a>&nbsp;during the Bolsonaro administration. Much of this is occurring within indigenous territories, such as that of the Munduruku, where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/terrasindigenas.org.br\/pt-br\/terras-indigenas\/3770\">illegal deforestation tripled<\/a>&nbsp;in 2019 compared to the previous year, and has only expanded since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMining has been growing very fast in the territory since 2019, when promises [from the president] began that one would be able to mine on indigenous lands,\u201d Alessandra Munduruku, deputy coordinator of the Federation of Indigenous Peoples of Par\u00e1, told Di\u00e1logo Chino<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data collected by Lira, based on INPE sources, confirms an explosion in illegal activity during the years of the Bolsonaro administration. In 2018, he reports, 470 hectares of native forest were cleared for mining on indigenous lands in Par\u00e1 state, a figure that jumped to 2,404 hectares in 2019 and has continued to increase since then. They have wiped out rivers, streams \u2013 it\u2019s just mud. There are no more fish, and when there are, they are contaminated by mercury. The organisation counts 317 deaths in the last decade \u2013 likely an underestimated number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe cannot tire of asking for justice for those who fought to defend the country\u2019s environmental policies,\u201d said Auricelia Arapiun, one of the leaders of the&nbsp;<em>ribeirinho<\/em>&nbsp;communities on the banks of the Tapaj\u00f3s and Arapiuns rivers. \u201cThere have been so many deaths, not only of them [Pereira and Phillips].
