China is by far the world\u2019s biggest producer and consumer of fish products, most of which are farmed rather than caught in the wild. Fish has been farmed in the country for thousands of years, but the modern aquaculture industry kicked off in earnest in the 1970s with shellfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These days, finfish such as croaker and grouper are driving growth. But there\u2019s a big problem with these fish \u2013 they\u2019re carnivorous. To rear to maturity, they require large amounts of fish feed, which is made out of other, smaller wild-caught fish. This is enhancing the problem of overfishing in China\u2019s waters (and also further afield). So what are the solutions?
