The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin<\/a> has the highest level of protection in China, but its numbers are dwindling fast. In Hong Kong, where the species is affectionately known as the Chinese white dolphin, only 37 individuals remain. Their struggle for survival pits them against massive development projects, busy ferries and fishing vessels, and a dangerous medley of marine pollutants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One that\u2019s rarely considered is noise. For an animal that uses echolocation to find food and stay in contact with its group, the impact of increasing man-made clamour should not be underestimated. The same is true for other marine species, all of which rely on sound in some way to survive under water. So, what are the solutions? How can we mitigate the cacophony in Asia\u2019s oceans to help keep vulnerable species like the Chinese white dolphin safe from harm?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
