A giant coal mine near the Qilian mountains on the\u00a0northwest edge of the Tibetan plateau\u00a0is illegally encroaching on a nature reserve at the source of the Yellow River,<\/span>according to a Greenpeace investigatio<\/a>n<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n


\u201cThis huge coal mine dug into the birthplace of China\u2019s mother river is arguably the most shocking example of the threat coal poses to the country\u2019s water supply,\u201d says Greenpeace East Asia climate and energy campaigner Li Shuo.\u00a0<\/span>

\u201cChina\u2019s growing hunger for coal is not only fuelling the cycle of air pollution crises plaguing the country\u2019s largest cities, it\u2019s also using up enormous amounts of water, threatening whole regions with water shortages and desertification.\u00a0<\/span>

\u201cThe Beijing authorities have shown a strong determination in tackling the smog emergency triggered by coal fumes – now they need to display the same resolve in protecting the country\u2019s water reserves from this destructive industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
