They also carry a strong message of conservation that leaves an instant impression in the minds of young and old alike. Rohan Chakravarty, a wildlife and environment cartoonist from India, has won this year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WWF<\/a> International President\u2019s Award for his efforts to change attitudes towards nature.<\/p>\n<p>The award is the top accolade given by WWF to recognise leadership in young conservationists who are under the age of 30 from around the world. The award ceremony was held recently in Manado, Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_22257\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22257\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22257\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/oil-palm-vs-rainforests-vertical-copy-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"650\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22257\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oil Palm Monoculture in North East India [Rohan Chakravarty\/ Green Humour]<\/figcaption><\/figure>Hailing from Nagpur (also known as the tiger capital of India), Chakravarty was an enthusiastic bird watcher since childhood. He was on his way to becoming a dentist when the sighting of a magnificent tigress at a waterhole at Nagzira Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra threw his planned career off gear. It fired up the wildlife lover in him, compelled him to leave dentistry and instead use doodling as a conservation tool. It was a stark and a risky career shift in a country where traditionally a lot more emphasis is given to academics rather than creative pursuits when it comes to choosing a profession.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Making a mark<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, this young cartoonist and illustrator has made his mark for sketching passionately and consistently on wildlife, climate change and other environmental issues and has many national and international magazines and newspapers lining up for his cartoons. With over 400 cartoons, Chakravarty probably has one of the largest online cartoon repositories \u2014 under the banner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenhumour.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Humour <\/a> \u2014 that centres around environmental issues. Green Humour, which is also the country\u2019s first comic strip to be distributed internationally, showcases how artistic skills can become an effective communication tool to highlight green issues. And for those who like quirky collectibles, there are cartoon mugs and T-shirts available on the website.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_22256\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22256\" style=\"width: 680px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22256\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Rohan3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"927\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arctic Tern Anecdotes: The cartoonist\u2019s humorous take on Arctic Terns who migrate over 70,000 km across the globe and their view of life at both the poles [Rohan Chakravarty \/ Green Humour]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\u201cI am honoured to receive the title, which, more than an award, is a reminder of my responsibility to both my art and my muse \u2014 wildlife.
