It&#8217;s an oasis in this cold desert, thanks to the Menthosa glacier. But it&#8217;s an oasis under threat, as the time of year when the glacier melt is at the maximum has been disturbed by climate change.<\/p>\n<p>A team from the New Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University has been studying the effects of climate change in this remote region, as part of the Inter University Consortium on Cryosphere and Climate Change (IUCCC) for the project Himalayan Cryosphere and Climate Change: Science and Society, funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.<\/p>\n<p>The author, a part of the team, clicked these photographs during a recent visit in connection with the study.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22734\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22734\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22734\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Miyar&nbsp;valley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22735\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22735\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22735\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adaptation to a climate with snow cover for three to four months comes naturally to the residents. Greens and other food are dried and stored for the winter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22736\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22736\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22736\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fuel for heating and cooking is usually stored in the backyards or the roadside. Willows are grown for this purpose<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22737\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22737\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22737\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Food is grown with water that flows through these glacier-fed channels, called kuhl. The melting of the snow is another crucial source of moisture in the soil. Till recently, the kuhls were made and managed completely through community action, with the division of labour shouldered equally by all cultivating households<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22738\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22738\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22738\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In recent years, residents have been receiving wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme when they work on the kuhls. Still, at the time of construction, the entire community gets together to ensure that every household takes part, since there is a serious shortage of labour in the area<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22739\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22739\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22739\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-6-final.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"541\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rotation of water supply from a kuhl to individual farms is decided by a simple lottery \u2013 write numbers on bits of folded papers in one box and names of farmers in another box, and then pick from the two boxes. On the right is a close-up of the results. The list is written out by members of the Yuva Mandal, an organisation of men<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22740\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22740\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22740\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There are strong gender divisions despite the presence of a Mahila Mandal, an organisation of women. Members of the Mahila Mandal gather here to cook for a community festival. The JNU study team found one instance where the Mahila Mandal had taken a major decision \u2013 on how to use a degraded forest. Other tasks are extensions of domestic work, while members of the Yuva Mandal are meant to deal with \u201cproductive activities\u201d, say the residents<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22741\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22741\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Over the last two decades, agriculture in the Miyar valley has moved to commercial crops, mainly peas and potatoes. All the peas that are grown are sold<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22742\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22742\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Women do most of the agricultural work, for their family farms and also as \u201cexchange labour\u201d in other farms. Rarely do they get any monetary wage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22743\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22743\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22743\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Men, on the other hand, are engaged primarily in market transactions, as seen here, selling peas to contractors. Many of these men reported a decline in the yield of peas in the last five years or so. Some think one reason may be higher incidence of pests and diseases due to increased temperature<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22744\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22744\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22744\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/photo-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"765\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22744\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the Miyar valley, willow trees have been dying in large numbers.
