The village, known for milk-based&nbsp;sweets called \u2018khuwa\u2019, now has fisheries and poultry coops for the first time in its history.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_23192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23192\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23192\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1E1A9049.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"680\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chyamrangbeshi, Kavre, Nepal [image by: Nabin Baral]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\u201cMy son got the ideas from several NGOs who came here to help after the earthquake,\u201d says Somnath Ghimire. In the village of about 50 families, almost every household relies on selling milk to the khuwa factories as its major source of income. \u201cIt\u2019s a completely new business for us.&nbsp; It\u2019s also what we had never even thought we\u2019d do, as we don\u2019t eat meat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are now three poultry coops in the village and several fishponds, some of which have already started selling fish. It takes some time to stabilise fish ponds to a point where they can produce fish at a sellable scale.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_23193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23193\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23193\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1E1A8902.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"680\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The fish pond of Kamal Lama, who was the first in the village to start fish farming [image by: Nabin Baral]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\u201cWe had subsistence farming. We continued what our parents did but after the earthquake, several organisations advised us about different ideas that could regain our economic prospects in better ways,\u201d says Ghimire. \u201cWe realised that diversifying our economy is important, because if something goes wrong in one business we will have other options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"From milk to meat\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/239640503?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The younger generation is also getting involved in these new businesses. Alongside his job as an accountant in a nearby school, Kamal Lama works in a fishery and has made good earnings from seasonal vegetable farming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to a fish hatchery in Kathmandu and bought fingerlings \u2013 they are growing now. I am hoping to sell them soon,\u201d says Lama.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_23194\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23194\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23194\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1E1A8880.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"680\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Somnath Ghimire explains how hard it is to manage financially on subsistence farming. [image by: Nabin Baral]<\/figcaption><\/figure>Not that long ago, villagers used to walk several hours to reach the southern part of the Kathmandu valley to sell ghee and khuwa. After a rough road connected the village more than 10 years ago, life has been easier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContractors have signed a yearly contract with us for khuwa and buy from us every day, so there is no problem for the market and demand is increasing,\u201d says Uddhav Dahal, who owns one of the three khuwa factories in the village.<\/p>\n<p>On average, the factories produce around 100 kilogrammes of khuwa every day, using milk sold to them by villagers each morning. Manually, the production of khuwa is a tough job.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_23205\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23205\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23205\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1E1A9022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"680\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Milk-based sweets \u2018khuwa\u2019, production house of Tul Prasad Dahal Chyamrangbeshi, Kavre. It\u2019s bad for health and for the environment as we have to cut down trees, but it\u2019s not easy to shift to modern technology,\u201d said Ram Prasad Ghimire, another factory owner.<\/p>\n<p>Shifting from traditional to modern methods demands both knowledge and money. Ghimire has a plan to increase production and switch to machines run by electricity, but he worries about the taste; he has heard that machine-produced sweets don\u2019t taste as good as those produced manually.&nbsp; He said: \u201cThere is too much confusion but I am seeking some support to bring in new technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>We want to hear from you!
