She lives in a protected area of the floodplains in the eastern district of Sunsari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her husband died 15 years ago, leaving her with two sons and two daughters \u2013 and not enough land to grow crops that would sustain the family. But by weaving mats and selling them at market, she was able to provide for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow all four children are married,\u201d she said, smiling. \u201cStill, I do not need their money. I can earn for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rudridevi can make two 72&#8221;\/47&#8221; (1.8 by 1.2 metre) mats a day, selling each for NPR 200-300 (USD 1.7-2.6). Some designs can fetch up to NPR 1,050 (USD 9) \u2013 but take at least two days to finish. She told <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/\">The Third Pole<\/a> that she earns between NPR 15,000-18,000 (USD 12.8-15.4) per month \u2013&nbsp;an average income for the area, but one usually out of reach for marginalised people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20025549\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Shambhadevi Sardar, 55, and Dhanmatidevi Sardar, 60, of the same locality, are also financially independent thanks to this skill. \u201cWe have plenty of <em>pater<\/em> (bulrush) and <em>jalkumbhi <\/em>(water hyacinth) around our homes and wildlife reserve,\u201d said Dhanmatidevi. She added that demand is high for the mats, with people travelling from Kathmandu to buy them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All three are members of Koshi Tappu Wetland Multipurpose Cooperative, a group of 25 Sardar women that was set up in 2010 and is chaired by Rudridevi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-men-follow-women-s-lead\">Men follow women\u2019s lead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, men have started to join the women-led enterprise. Gulat Sardar, 60, Shambhadevi\u2019s husband, now works alongside his wife. \u201cIf we work together, we can make more mats. More mats mean more money,\u201d he chuckled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jageshwor Sardar, 65, who is married to Dhanmatidevi, also collaborates with his wife. \u201cShe can do better, but I can help her,\u201d said Jageshwor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muneshwor Sardar, 50, had a different story. He lost his wife in 2017 during a wild elephant attack. But invasive plants threaten its biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashok Ram, chief conservation officer of the wildlife reserve, said hyacinths and bulrush cover approximately 1,000 hectares of the 17,500-hectare reserve. Oxygen levels fall and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepjol.info\/index.php\/BANKO\/article\/view\/33478\">water quality is altered<\/a>, which impacts tiny aquatic creatures. They can also change water flow. Second, it improves the livelihoods of the Sardar community and third, it creates more space for fish and snails which are also good fodders to wetland-dependent indigenous communities like Sardar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ram said that while such initiatives will not permanently eradicate the plants, uprooting large quantities helps to safeguard the ecosystem.&nbsp;\u201cIndigenous enterprises can help lessen invasive plants\u2019 impacts through annual harvesting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sustaining-indigenous-livelihoods\">Sustaining indigenous livelihoods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sardar community, formally known as Bantar, are a marginalised indigenous group. They live mainly in 12 districts of southern Nepal and the adjoining Indian districts of Shaharsa, Darbhanga, Purnia and Madhubani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bantar are also one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/portals.iucn.org\/library\/sites\/library\/files\/documents\/WTL-031.pdf\">10 biggest<\/a> indigenous Nepalese communities dependent on wetlands. For generations, Sardar women have depended on wetland resources for traditional handicrafts, Satya Narayan Sardar, a scholar from the community, told <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/\">The Third Pole<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acknowledging the crucial role of communities in conservation, in 2008, the United Nations Development Programme and government of Nepal jointly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.np.undp.org\/content\/nepal\/en\/home\/operations\/projects\/closed-projects\/environment---energy\/csuwn.html\">launched<\/a> a programme to encourage collaboration in the management of wetlands called Conservation and Sustainable Use of Wetland in Nepal (CSUWN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20033500\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2010, CSUWN organised trainings for the cooperative, focusing on the harvesting of materials and weaving techniques. \u201cI was invited to provide training for three days to Sardar women. Help has also come from the Rotary Club of Jawalakhel in Kathmandu, a non-profit human rights organisation, which has a revolving fund of NPR 161,000 (USD 1,400) to finance the group\u2019s operations and has donated six community looms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-market-comes-to-the-wetland\">Market comes to the wetland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a famous travel destination. Before the pandemic, hundreds of visitors would visit every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To take advantage of this, in September 2020 Sardar women opened a souvenir shop selling handmade mats, purses, bags, curtains and statues. Rudridevi Sardar said the shop has brought market to her doorstep. \u201cPreviously we had to send our products to Kathmandu. id=\"h-expand-community-led-conservation\">Expand community-led conservation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaudhary, the former chief conservation officer, said that to further reduce the harmful impact of invasive plants, more women can participate in the enterprise, adding \u201cfor this, we need mass production and mass markets\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shah agreed that the project can be expanded, adding that there is a 173.5 square kilometre \u2018buffer zone\u2019 (the land between the wildlife reserve and human settlements), where 1,790 people from the Sardar community live.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, \u201cWe need to encourage all of them to conserve wetland\u2026 because indigenous skills matter to
