Growing on the eight-hectare piece of land in the upscale neighbourhood of Clifton are fruit-bearing trees: the beginnings of an urban forest. Previously, it was a dumping ground, with plastic and animal carcasses piled as high as six metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-did-you-know alignright block--did-you-know\"><p class=\"block--did-you-know__title\">Get the whole picture<\/p><div class=\"block--did-you-know__content\"><p>This is one in a series of articles exploring some of the ways communities and governments in Asia are responding to the biodiversity crisis. You can view the whole series\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/series\/biodiversity-series\/\">here<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Oblivious to the scorching heat, a man in a purple T-shirt and blue jeans roams the grounds to monitor tree growth. It is Masood Lohar, founder and director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CliftonUrbanForest2021\">Clifton Urban Forest<\/a>, an initiative described as a \u201cgreen lung\u201d in Pakistan\u2019s largest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1606726\">city of 20 million people<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithin two months, we have developed Pakistan\u2019s biggest urban forest by working day and night,\u201d claims Lohar. Pakistan\u2019s Ministry of Climate Change said 126 urban forest projects using the Miyawaki technique are being developed across the country, with 51 in Lahore, 50 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 20 in Islamabad and five in Karachi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-accordion block--accordion\"><span class=\"block--accordion__title\">What is the Miyawaki method?<\/span><div class=\"block--accordion__content\"><div class=\"block--accordion__content__inner\"><p>The Miyawaki method is an innovation widely credited to Japanese botanist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akira_Miyawaki\">Akira Miyawaki<\/a> in the mid-1950s.<\/p><p> It promotes the creation of densely packed forests that together form an ecosystem. <\/p><p>The idea is to plant three to five trees of different native species per square metre, so the plants compete to form a dense forest. <\/p><p>Research shows these trees can grow <a href=\"https:\/\/daily.jstor.org\/the-miyawaki-method-a-better-way-to-build-forests\/\">10 times faster<\/a> than conventional plantations.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ImranKhanPTI\/status\/1360464267699445760\">Prime Minister Imran Khan<\/a> inaugurated a spring plantation campaign and the first ever Miyawaki forest in Islamabad, an event that signalled his commitment to his party\u2019s flagship Billion Tree Tsunami project. Following this, the Punjab government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pha.gop.pk\/\">Parks and Horticulture Authority<\/a> planted around 160,000 trees of 20 native species on eight hectares of land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe initiative will be expanded to other cities and towns to boost climate resilience in urban areas,\u201d said Muhammad Saleem, spokesperson for the Ministry of Climate Change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-pullout-stat alignleft undefined block--pullout-stat\"><p class=\"block--pullout-stat__title\">126<\/p><div class=\"block--pullout-stat__content\"><p>Miyawaki urban forest projects are being developed across Pakistan<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In Karachi, where tree cover is a meagre 7%, Lohar said urban greening is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/326855839_Influence_of_evaporative_cooling_by_urban_forests_on_cooling_demand_in_cities\">one solution<\/a> to the city\u2019s many environmental challenges, which include heatwaves, urban flooding and air pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His aim is to plant 3 million native trees using the Miyawaki technique on 90 hectares of public land by the Clifton beach, which is currently dotted with restaurants along a wide concrete pavement. Last year, rainwater was stagnant in front of my home for at least two weeks. I hired a big vehicle and came to see the Karachi Urban Forest. The land was dry as the plants had sucked up all the water,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20037549\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Though there is no shortage of Miyawaki-style initiatives in Pakistan, a lack of research, high costs and saline water stand in the way of their long-term success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-the-miyawaki-method-work-in-pakistan\">Does the Miyawaki method work in Pakistan?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Javed Mahar, an environmental expert and forester, told The Third Pole: \u201cWhile efforts are being taken to grow green cover using the Miyawaki method, natural forestry is being ignored which requires no water, just protection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahar said the Miyawaki technique was invented in the equatorial zone, where annual rainfall is about 1,600 millimetres, whereas Pakistan is in the subtropical zone and records annual rainfall at 170 to 250 millimetres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur native trees like the <em>ghaf<\/em> and <em>neem<\/em> are very slow-growing. They take hundreds of years to become mature trees. The efficacy of the Miyawaki technique in arid zones like ours has not been tested,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-did-you-know alignright block--did-you-know\"><p class=\"block--did-you-know__title\">How much can green spaces cool down cities?<\/p><div class=\"block--did-you-know__content\"><p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/cooling-effect-drops-with-increasing-distance-from-urban-green-spaces-in-bengaluru-reveals-new-study-101616957022978.html\">study<\/a> in Bengaluru, India, found that:<br\/><br\/>\u2022 The average urban green space was 2.23C cooler than areas far from greenery<br\/>\u2022 Buildings and infrastructure experienced a cooling effect from urban green spaces from up to 347 metres away<br\/>\u2022 Reliance on air conditioning and refrigeration was higher in areas further from green spaces <br\/>\u2022 Green spaces reduced air and noise pollution and absorbed rainwater<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In neighbouring India, author and conservationist Pradip Krishen has also voiced scepticism about the success of such projects in a subtropical climate. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/quick-growing-forests-showcase-miyawaki-horticultural-technique-in-india\/article33126240.ece\">interview with The Hindu<\/a> last year, Krishen said the concept was more suited to temperate regions with dense coniferous forest, and that in India they look like \u201ctennis-courts filled with dense stands of plants\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahar suggested a different technique. \u201cIn Japan, you will find more than 80 species in the same area, but in tropical and subtropical regions, two or three species have the same positive seasonal environment impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the Miyawaki technique requires the planting of \u201cevergreen and deciduous plants, light demanders, shade-bearing plants as well as deep and shallow-rooted plants\u201d, but in Pakistan this scientific approach is not being applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI saw <em>babul<\/em> [gum Arabic trees] being planted in Miyawaki forests as a native tree, but it kills other plants \u2013 including its own species \u2013 while it grows. Aside from that, 90% of the plant nursery comes from bazaars, where these plants undergo certain treatments and become sick forever,\u201d Mahar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-water-woes-and-high-costs\">Water woes and high costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Farah Afridi, who worked with Shehzad Qureshi on the Karachi Urban Forest project in 2016, said salinity in the city\u2019s soil is bad for the trees. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qureshi used filtered drainage water for his pilot Miyawaki forest project in Karachi. He said: \u201cIn some parts of the land, the plants were unable to sustain growth. This is because of salinity, since the forest is very close to the sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-pull-quote block--pull-quote\"><div class=\"block--pull-quote__wrapper\"><blockquote class=\"block--pull-quote__quote\">Are five small forests in a city of 20 million people enough?<\/blockquote><cite class=\"block--pull-quote__cite\">Ahmad Rafay Alam, environmental lawyer<\/cite><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Miyawaki method is also more expensive than traditional forests, and the Ministry of Climate Change acknowledges that it is only feasible in limited spaces, such as \u201cpublic parks, barren or abandoned pieces of land\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFirst, a machine is required to dig a metre-deep hole to plant a tree. Every 100 square meters require 3 tonnes of bagasse [plant fibre], rice husk, manure, fresh soil and sweet water \u2013 a lot of money goes down the earth,\u201d Qureshi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-article-image aligncenter block--article-image\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><div class=\"block--article-image__column\"><div class=\"block--article-image__image\"><img class=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Urban-Forest-Pakistan-scaled.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Urban-Forest-Pakistan-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Urban-Forest-Pakistan-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Urban-Forest-Pakistan-scaled.jpg 2560w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 768px, (max-width: 1024px) 1024px, 2560px\" alt=\"Urban forest, Pakistan, Manoj Genani\"\/><\/div><div class=\"block--article-image__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--article-image__caption\">Both labour and materials are needed to create an urban forest, making them more expensive than traditional forests (Image: Manoj Genani)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Urban-Forest-Pakistan-scaled.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"1,014 KB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1707\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2560\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahmood Nasir, the former inspector general of forests, said: \u201cIt\u2019s such an expensive business that the plantation cost of one-eighth of an acre is up to PKR 600,000 [USD 3,900]. We don\u2019t have water for drinking \u2013 where will one get water for these forests from? After filtration, drainage water is more expensive,\u201d he said, acknowledging that though there are good institutions, there is no sound research on this technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s better to plant vertical gardens instead of Miyawaki forests,\u201d he added. \u201cWe can bring the temperature 5C to 9C down just by covering concrete with greenery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-need-for-traditional-forests\">Need for \u2018traditional\u2019 forests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Afforestation is critical to mitigate climate change. The International Union for Conservation of Nature says forests help to stabilise the climate, as they \u201cregulate ecosystems, protect biodiversity, play an integral part in the carbon cycle, support livelihoods and can help drive sustainable growth\u201d. While urban forests can moderate local temperatures and beautify concrete spaces, Pakistan\u2019s rapid deforestation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1574424\">second-highest in Asia<\/a> after Afghanistan, persists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a climate-vulnerable country such as Pakistan where <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/early-heatwaves-foreshadow-uncertain-future-for-millions-in-south-asia\/\">deadly heatwaves are predicted<\/a> to become more common, <a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/world\/pakistan-plans-to-plant-10-billion-trees-by-2023-to-restore-forest-cover\/569129\/\">forest cover<\/a> is among the lowest in the world (5% compared with the global average of 31%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmad Rafay Alam, an environmental lawyer, said it is important to examine the long-term benefits of Miyawaki efforts. \u201cGiven the urban heat island effect, these forests provide shade, beauty and even a cooling effect but it\u2019s important to think about scale. Are five small forests in a city of 20 million people enough? Those behind these initiatives should think of how communities will benefit from them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afridi, who worked on the Karachi Urban Forest project, drew attention to another challenge: limited space. \u201cOur cities have become completely concretised and town planners don\u2019t keep plantation in mind. As a result, space for plantations is hard to find in the city.
