{"id":20075991,"date":"2021-07-19T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-19T08:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thethirdpole.net\/?p=75991"},"modified":"2021-07-27T12:22:23","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T06:52:23","slug":"people-take-up-trekking-in-kashmir-in-unprecedented-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/nature\/people-take-up-trekking-in-kashmir-in-unprecedented-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"People take up trekking in unprecedented numbers in Kashmir"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When Mudasir Bashir, an ardent mountaineer and cyclist, heard about the globally trending slogan \u201cStay home, stay safe\u201d to combat the spread of Covid-19, the 34-year-old from the town of Sopore in northern Jammu and Kashmir insisted he had a better mantra for all times: \u201cStay fit, stay safe and keep climbing mountains\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning to nature for solace, he says, is even more important in a place like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/culture\/article\/kashmir-conflict-how-did-it-start\">conflict-ravaged Kashmir<\/a>, where people have lived through violence for over three decades. The pandemic has added to existing stress levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He quotes a Kashmiri proverb to describe the importance of mountains in local folklore and how mountains test friendship and camaraderie: \u201c<em>Yaaran manz yaar, bala yaar<\/em> [Your best friend is one who accompanies you to mountains].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-pullout-stat alignleft undefined block--pullout-stat\"><p class=\"block--pullout-stat__title\">18<\/p><div class=\"block--pullout-stat__content\"><p>Number of trekking clubs in Jammu and Kashmir, up from two in 2013<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people started to realise the importance of staying fit and safe, he says, only when the pandemic struck. \u201cThe fact is that we always need to be physically fit to deal with health-related challenges. Trekking to mountains not only keeps you fit. It keeps you fighting fit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bashir has completed 100 expeditions, including to Kashmir\u2019s highest peak, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kolahoi_Peak\">Mount Kolahoi<\/a>, and several alpine lakes. \u201cMy target is to get to all the alpine lakes [at least 200] and peaks of Kashmir,\u201d he says. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-appeal-of-alpine-adventures-in-kashmir-grows\">Appeal of alpine adventures in Kashmir grows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, trekking to Kashmir\u2019s peaks attracted few locals. Not any more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Explaining the change, Tanveer Khan \u2013 president of Pathfinders, a trekking group \u2013 says: \u201cSocial media is a big reason. But I think the foundation for making trekking a craze was laid by Mahmood Ahmad Shah, an ace trekker of Kashmir, in 2013.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, Shah revived a society, the Jammu and Kashmir Mountaineering and Hiking Club (JKMHC), which had been founded by British missionary and educationist Tyndale Biscoe in 1934. When Shah revived it, JKMHC and Alpine Adventures were the only two trekking clubs in the region. But when the group became so large, we broke into separate groups.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever Khan\u2019s trekking group faces a hurdle, their go-to man is Shah, who has the distinction of trekking to over 100 of Kashmir\u2019s alpine lakes and knows \u201ceverything related to trekking in Kashmir\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shah has noticed with interest the growing trekking trend. \u201cIt is so good to see people are now taking interest in mountains,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/\">The Third Pole<\/a>. \u201cMountain treks are certainly increasing and there are lots of new groups which have come up recently organising treks, especially on Sundays.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-pull-quote block--pull-quote\"><div class=\"block--pull-quote__wrapper\"><blockquote class=\"block--pull-quote__quote\">Ideally, the number of visitors in forests should be regulated besides making all arrangements for avoiding pollution and degradation in forests<\/blockquote><cite class=\"block--pull-quote__cite\">Khurshid Salman, the Peoples\u2019 Environmental Council<\/cite><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks to social media, people find it easy to get on a single platform. Social media has become an aggregator for like-minded people,\u201d Shah says.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the clubs, there may be dozens if not hundreds of groups where friends get together to trek, Khan estimates. \u201cI think social media has played a big role in popularising trekking \u2013 people love to trek and share the photos of their adventures on social media.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-need-for-caution\">Need for caution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Khan cautions that people need to be careful on difficult excursions. \u201cPhysical fitness and a lot of awareness about trekking and trekking routes is a must.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor example, recently we noticed that a group had gone trekking to Tosa Maidan [a meadow that was used as a training ground for artillery shelling until recently] in winter. This is not recommended because if there is an unexploded shell, it will not be visible in snow,\u201d Khan says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bashir says: \u201cBesides being physically fit, someone aspiring to be a regular trekker needs to know that trekking involves other compromises as well. It has opened 29 such buildings and is going to open 58 more. Seven trekking routes leading to different wildlife conservation reserves are being created by the department. Mohit Gera, Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s principal chief conservator of forests, told <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/\">The Third Pole<\/a>: \u201cThese guest houses are in idyllic settings and were so far only being used by officers. But now they are open for nature lovers and trekkers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of potential for adventure tourism in alpine areas. So, we are trying to use our existing infrastructure and involving local communities near the end-points so that their infrastructure and services can also be used by <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/culture\/in-kyrgyzstan-community-based-tourism-shows-a-way-forward\/\">eco-tourists<\/a> or trekkers,\u201d Gera says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20006097\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20010107\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he hopes this will add to local incomes and give residents a stake in conserving forests. \u201cThere are other benefits when more people visit forests, such as information about forest fires or any illegal activity,\u201d Gera adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is important that increased footfall does not put pressure on the fragile mountain environment. Soil erosion, construction of <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/879763\/how-kashmirs-famed-mountain-resorts-are-being-turned-into-heavily-polluted-concrete-jungles\">infrastructure<\/a>, disturbance of wildlife and littering are some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007%2F978-3-030-72667-6#about\">potential impacts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20022585\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Khurshid Salman, chair of the Peoples\u2019 Environmental Council (PEC), a civil society organisation in Srinagar, said that it is good for people to visit forests, but care should be taken to ensure it does not create  problems of pollution and degradation in these ecologically sensitive zones. \u201cThe concerned officials should take in consideration the negative impacts of encouraging more and more people to visit forests. Ideally, the number of visitors in forests should be regulated besides making all arrangements for avoiding pollution and degradation in forests,\u201d Salman told <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/\">The Third Pole<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-boom-for-business\">Boom for business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Popularising Kashmir as an <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/pollution\/indias-ngt-punishes-adventure-tourists-ignores-bigger-polluters\/\">adventure tourism<\/a> destination could <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/nature\/protecting-earth-economy\/\">help local businesses and communities<\/a>, says Mahmood Ahmad Shah, a bureaucrat who also organises treks. \u201cWe have bodies like Adventure Tour Operators Association of India which have big travel agents aligned with them. They can play a good role. Kashmir has not been on their itinerary because of the circumstances here for the past three decades. But now they are very interested in coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mehraj Mir, who runs an adventure tourism company called Kashmir Treks, is excited by the new prospects. \u201cIf more people come from outside for trekking in Kashmir, it will really add to our business. As of now, our business is totally down due to the Covid-19 lockdown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Javid Ahmad Shanglo of Kashmir Mountain Adventures says that the second wave of Covid-19 infections (which peaked in May across most of India) caused huge disruption to his business. \u201cIf the pandemic situation improves and the security situation also remains stable, we can expect a good season of adventure tourism ahead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mountaineering-has-multiple-benefits\">Mountaineering has multiple benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The routes outlined by the forest department range from day-long treks up and down mountain slopes to long trans-mountain traverses involving a week of trekking and camping. The longer routes pass through spectacular scenery with wild fauna and flora. They also enable interactions with the people who live in these landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Documentary filmmaker Jalal Jeelani, who often treks for his work, says visitors to mountains benefit in several ways. \u201cDuring the ongoing pandemic, I know many people who used mountains as stress-busters and fitness centres.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou even get education when you go there. If I was not in the mountains, I would not get a chance to talk with nomads in detail, seeing their lifestyles and learn an interesting thing about how they relate to the pandemic which has frustrated people across the globe,\u201d Jeelani says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018We don\u2019t have any experience of it [Covid-19],\u2019 they told me. It was not difficult for me to decipher why they don\u2019t have such experience. They live with nature; they pray in the open, they don\u2019t go to places like markets where they can get infections. They live a simple but complete life while wandering in the mountains.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-article-image aligncenter block--article-image\" itemscope
