{"id":20085269,"date":"2022-03-25T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-25T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thethirdpole.net\/?p=85269"},"modified":"2022-08-31T15:16:54","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T09:46:54","slug":"walung-villagers-nepal-himalayas-climate-change-signal-of-divine-revenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/walung-villagers-nepal-himalayas-climate-change-signal-of-divine-revenge\/","title":{"rendered":"For villagers in Nepali Himalayas, climate change is a signal of divine revenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">\u201cThere was a red cloud in the sky the other morning,\u201d says Pemba Bhuti Sherpa, a yak herder in the Himalayan village of Walung in the Taplejung District of north-eastern Nepal. \u201cIt might snow tomorrow\u201d.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in November 2021, she has a vested interest in foreseeing the snow\u2019s arrival: her herd is scattered across the upper reaches of the Tamor Valley, in which Walung is situated, and if the animals aren\u2019t brought down before the heavens open, she\u2019ll be cut off from them. If the grass is buried under a thick blanket of snow, the yaks could starve without supplementary fodder. Considering the sky\u2019s signal, Pemba collects the animals in anticipation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when the next day arrives, the snow does not.\u202f &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u200b&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When snow finally comes, on December 29, it comes all at once. Three feet fall within hours \u2013 one foot for each month the snowfall has been delayed. When Pemba was a child, the first snows used to fall in September.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After one roof collapses under the groaning weight of snow, the other villagers take to their rooftops to shift the drifts. This ritual used to happen six or seven times in a winter. Until the day before, the weather had been clear, showing none of the traditional indicators of snowfall, such as the <em>guzig: <\/em>wispy ropes of cloud draped between the stars. The yak were roaming freely across the valley when they were suddenly stranded by snowdrifts. Beyond the reach of herders, six or seven yak perish in the hills from starvation or avalanches, representing a loss of 960,000 Nepalese rupees (nearly 8,000 US dollars) for their distraught owners. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-pull-quote block--pull-quote\"><div class=\"block--pull-quote__wrapper\"><blockquote class=\"block--pull-quote__quote\">Yak herders are no longer able to depend on their traditional knowledge for forecasting weather<\/blockquote><cite class=\"block--pull-quote__cite\">Tashi Dorji, ICIMOD<\/cite><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bThese events are grimly familiar to Pemba. After similarly unpredictable and disruptive snowfall two years ago, she lost half of her 90-strong herd, incurring losses worth tens of thousands of US dollars, she says.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tashi Dorji, who heads the conservation programme the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icimod.org\/initiative\/klcdi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kanchenjunga Landscape Initiative<\/a> at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu, confirms that this tale is far from unique to Walung. This winter, he says, over a hundred yaks died in Bhutan due to unusually heavy snows; the fatalities topped 300 in northern Sikkim. This trend is set to continue: even if average global temperature increases are limited to 1.5\u00b0C, the Himalayas are predicted to warm <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-319-92288-1_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least a further 0.3\u00b0C<\/a>. As highly ecologically sensitive zones, the profound impacts already wreaked across high mountain environments by even small degrees of warming have been no surprise for climate scientists. But for many Walung residents, the cause of these environmental changes is unequivocal: it signifies the arrival of <em>kawa nyampa <\/em>\u2013 the bad times.<em>\u202f<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-climate-change-as-divine-revenge\">Climate change as divine revenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Across Buddhist areas of the Himalayas, it is widely believed that the landscape is animated by a host of local deities and spirits. When they are angered by human activities, a common form of retaliation is severe weather. This has been termed \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/3034768?casa_token=5pOa3Akjf1MAAAAA%3AESXNt17eGrY9aB2W1t37u7tEbrce6aWkZB7TqfUF8vQZLDU4RUTJ7tjdrt8GxpgTIOLggxhVDKx7UTsXreA8or_pi0dV7Lnqfpr0uXe2xqfHjXjQHcPm&amp;seq=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Tibetan moral climate<\/a>\u2019 by anthropologists Toni Huber and Poul Pedersen, in which the weather mimics the character of human communities.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar beliefs are shared by several indigenous communities in the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10584-006-9187-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arctic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/rgs-ibg.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/geo2.68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pacific Islands<\/a>. When the blizzard arrives, many burn an offering of tea, butter and incense called jhasumasu to protect their animals. But others worry that such external actions cannot mend the &#8216;broken&#8217; climate, as inner characters are to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeding the fire in a house plunged into shadow by midday power outages, 58-year-old widow Yangchen Sherpa says that the climatic changes of the recent past must be a sure sign of <em>kawa<\/em> <em>nyampa.<\/em> \u201cI don\u2019t know how to explain it. In the past, we used to have snowfall at the right time, rainfall at the right time, and the sky would be clear.\u201d Today, she says, \u201cwe hardly have snowfall, and there\u2019s too much rain. You can barely see snow these days.\u201d She is silent for a long moment, before speaking again: \u201cThe times have changed, and man has changed. All the good men are dead.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-beneficial-changes-a-bad-omen\">Beneficial changes a bad omen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Walung residents, climate change does not always feel like a catastrophe. While Himalayan biodiversity is <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/nature\/hindu-kush-biodiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declining at a staggering pace<\/a>, threatening the viability of entire ecosystems, the human costs do not always manifest immediately.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One herder confides: \u201cIn some ways, climate change makes our lives easier. What they leave is a sense of unease; the sense that the knowable world is slipping away.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">As the snowfall has become unreliable, residents complain that people\u2019s characters cannot be depended upon as they could in the past. With conflict and declining morals viewed as a key cause of <em>kawa nyampa, <\/em>many denounce their local community as the cause of the climatic changes they have noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cEveryone has become politically divided,\u201d complains Tamding Gyalpa Sherpa. \u201cPeople say to each other, \u2018you support [the Nepali political party] Congress, you support CPN [Nepal Communist Party]\u2019. This has caused the bad weather in Walung.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-faith-in-good-people-persists\">Faith in good people persists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>65-year-old retired trader Dorjee Bara remembers the devastating glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) that occurred during his childhood in Walung. An <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/glofs-himalayas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasingly common disaster<\/a> in the Himalayas, GLOFs \u2013 which occur when meltwater breaches the natural dams that contain glacial lakes \u2013 have become a potent symbol of climate change in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-article-image aligncenter block--article-image block--article-image--undefined\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><div class=\"block--article-image__column\"><div class=\"block--article-image__image\"><img class=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_4847-scaled.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_4847-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_4847-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_4847-scaled.jpg 2560w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 768px, (max-width: 1024px) 1024px, 2560px\" alt=\"An ancient kani gate leading to Walung monastery \"\/><\/div><div class=\"block--article-image__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--article-image__caption\">An ancient kani gate leading to Walung&#8217;s monastery (Image: Alice Millington)\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_4847-scaled.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"858 KB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1920\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2560\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet while Dorjee has observed extensive environmental changes in his lifetime, he is optimistic about future risks. The glacial lake that caused the earlier outburst in Walung has shrunk in recent years, as the formerly snow-covered mountainside has gradually transformed to naked rock. Many in Walung consider this a sign that the threat of GLOFs in the area has receded \u2013 although <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/glofs-himalayas\/\">scientists warn<\/a> that the risk across the Himalayas overall is rising.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on the Buddhist principle of karma, Dorjee believes that negative behaviour can bring on environmental calamities. But faith in his community \u2013 people described as \u201cgood people with good hearts\u201d \u2013 reassures him that the valley may be safe, for now. A cautionary note enters his voice. \u201cThe responsibility for disasters lies with us,\u201d he warns. \u201cIf we do bad things, and [a disaster] happens, I cannot blame the Earth, I cannot blame the Dalai Lama.
