{"id":20096561,"date":"2022-08-10T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thethirdpole.net\/?p=96561"},"modified":"2022-08-18T11:11:09","modified_gmt":"2022-08-18T05:41:09","slug":"aftermath-of-kyrgyzstans-viral-glacier-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/aftermath-of-kyrgyzstans-viral-glacier-collapse\/","title":{"rendered":"The aftermath of Kyrgyzstan\u2019s viral glacier collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">In his <a href=\"https:\/\/earthjournalism.net\/stories\/cop26-kyrgyzstans-climate-commitments\">speech<\/a> at COP26 last year,<strong> <\/strong>Kyrgyz president Sadyr Japarov spoke of the dangers that melting glaciers pose to mountain communities, and urged world leaders to act to save Central Asia\u2019s glaciers and water sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less than a year later, the world was transfixed by the sight of the precise danger Japarov had warned of. Last month, a British tourist hiking in the eastern Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan captured the moment a glacier collapsed at the Dzhuku Pass. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/CfyT6xcA27D\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\">footage<\/a> shows an avalanche of ice sweeping down the slope and over the hiker in a matter of seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Caught in an Avalanche in Kyrgyzstan (Everyone Survived) || ViralHog\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MtXBhi54HAg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>A video taken by British tourist Garry Shimmin on 8 July 2022, courtesy of ViralHog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The video, filmed on 8 July, attracted global attention to the effects of the climate crisis in Central Asia. The incident also happened just days after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2022\/07\/12\/glacier-avalanche-collapse-italy-kyrgyzstan\/\">glacier collapsed in Italy<\/a>, killing 11 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGlaciers are now melting and moving like snow avalanches when the weather warms up,\u201d said Anara Sultangazieva, an environmentalist in Kyrgyzstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSummer has been very hot in Europe and Central Asia for several years [and] extreme heatwaves have hit both regions,\u201d said Peter Neff, a glaciologist and climate scientist at the University of Minnesota. Between 1940 and the 1970s, the Catalog of Glaciers of the USSR recorded about 8,000 glaciers in the country, covering almost 8,000 sq km. It is also near Kyrgyzstan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/pollution\/review-of-kumtor-kyrgyz-gold-canadian-greed-and-a-peoples-misery\/\">biggest gold mine, Kumtor<\/a> \u2013&nbsp;about 30 km as the crow flies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activists The Third Pole spoke with said that, as well as climate change, mining activity is degrading the glaciers around the Kumtor mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMining operations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/313552853_The_impact_of_mining_on_rock_glaciers_and_glaciers_Examples_from_central_chile#:~:text=Conversely%2C%20there%20is%20also%20evidence,(Brenning%2C%202008%3B%20Brenning%20and\">contribute<\/a> to [glaciers] shrinking, whether through direct removal of ice or the deposition of waste and other dark materials on their surfaces,\u201d explained Kalia Moldogazieva,&nbsp;an ecologist and director of Bishkek-based Tree of Life, an environmental NGO. But it has also acknowledged the adverse effects of mining activities. In February this year, Dinara Kutmanova, minister of natural resources, ecology and technical supervision, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azattyk.org\/a\/31686432.html\">made a statement<\/a> regarding the dumping of industrial waste onto two glaciers near the Kumtor mine. Since last year, a legal dispute has been underway between the Kyrgyz government and Canadian mining company Centerra Gold, with the Kyrgyz government alleging the company has violated environmental laws, posing a danger to human health and the environment. (Centerra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/kyrgyzstan-pushing-out-of-court-settlement-with-centerra-source-2021-12-21\/\">has denied<\/a> these allegations.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moldogazieva said: \u201cSince the early 2000s, scientists and climate activists in Kyrgyzstan have tried to implement new laws to protect the Davydov and Lysyi glaciers in Kumtor from industrial destruction. In&nbsp;2017 <a href=\"http:\/\/cbd.minjust.gov.kg\/act\/view\/ru-ru\/111700?cl=ru-ru\">some changes<\/a> to the Water Code of the Kyrgyz Republic were made by our initiative, but these changes were not implemented at all, and I am afraid due to the new regulations letting foreign investors dig our mining places, we will have more environmental issues than before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe mountain ecosystem should be treated with kindness and immediate attention,\u201d said activist Anara Sultangazieva. \u201cIt is necessary to switch to the use of technologies that do not harm nature. Surely gold is expensive, but glaciers are more valuable.
