{"id":20117278,"date":"2023-06-07T18:36:41","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T13:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thethirdpole.net\/?p=117278"},"modified":"2023-06-20T15:27:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T09:57:50","slug":"is-nepal-doing-enough-to-educate-children-on-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/is-nepal-doing-enough-to-educate-children-on-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Nepal doing enough to educate children on climate change?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">As Himalayan communities grow <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/narrow-path-to-avoid-catastrophic-climate-change-ipcc\/\">increasingly vulnerable<\/a> to the impacts of rising temperatures, schools in Nepal are struggling to prepare young people for a future shaped by climate change, teachers and experts tell The Third Pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December 2019, <a href=\"http:\/\/202.45.146.138\/elibrary\/pages\/download.php?direct=1&amp;noattach=true&amp;ref=10001&amp;ext=pdf&amp;k=\">climate education<\/a> was included for the first time in Nepal\u2019s education goals, in the national curriculum developed and published by the education ministry\u2019s Curriculum Development Center (CDC). Translated into English, the relevant goal sets out \u201cto prepare citizens [to be] capable of reducing possible risks and managing disasters, while being aware of climate change, natural and manmade disasters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than three years later, however, multiple education experts and schoolteachers from across Nepal tell The Third Pole that access to educational resources on climate change remains limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lack-of-resources-for-climate-education\">Lack of resources for climate education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rama Devi Kafle Aryal is a teacher at Shree Adharbhut Bidhalaya, a primary school in the city of Bharatpur, around 180km south-west of Kathmandu. Aryal, who teaches a range of subjects including social studies, says the government has not provided \u201cproper guidance\u201d or educational resources on climate change and other environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shree Adharbhut Bidhalaya school is close to <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/livelihoods\/bittersweet-conservation-victory-chitwan-national-park-nepal\/\">Chitwan National Park<\/a>, where conservation successes have brought benefits but also problems for local people, especially indigenous groups. Over 80% of the school\u2019s students come from the indigenous Kumal community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20075280\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lesson on climate change is included in Social Studies, but [it only] briefly mentions general information,\u201d Aryal says. \u201cWe don&#8217;t have more resources or training to make teaching effective. We sometimes try to teach [about climate change] by searching for information on YouTube or in other books.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teachers further north in Solukhumbu district, where <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/moving-everest-base-camp-a-ridiculous-decision-says-record-holder-climber\/\">Mount Everest base camp<\/a> is located, tell The Third Pole that they too struggle to communicate with students about the problems that rising temperatures are creating in the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe it is because we are far from the capital city Kathmandu we have not received much attention,\u201d says Ngawang Dorjee Baing, principal of Khumjung Secondary School in Solukhumbu district. \u201cI don&#8217;t remember getting any direct programme from the government on climate education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-article-image aligncenter block--article-image block--article-image--article\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><div class=\"block--article-image__column\"><div class=\"hide-expand block--article-image__image\"><img class=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01-Khumjung-Secondary-School-scaled.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01-Khumjung-Secondary-School-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01-Khumjung-Secondary-School-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01-Khumjung-Secondary-School-scaled.jpg 2560w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 768px, (max-width: 1024px) 1024px, 2560px\" alt=\"people near school building in front of mountain\"\/><\/div><div class=\"block--article-image__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--article-image__caption\">Khumjung Secondary School, also known as the Hillary School, in the Himalayan district of Solukhumbu (Photo courtesy of Ngawang Dorjee Baing)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01-Khumjung-Secondary-School-scaled.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"779 KB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1920\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2560\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGovernment officials and experts are eager to talk about mountains in our region to explain the intensity of climate change at a national and international level. But there is no serious interest in talking about it to children here, who deserve to know more about impacts and adaptation,\u201d says Baing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moecdc.gov.np\/en\/curriculum\">classes 7 and 8<\/a> (ages 12 to 13) are given dedicated lessons on climate change through Nepal\u2019s state-set curriculum. After that, however, for the remainder of their schooling, which concludes at age 17 in class 12, the state curriculum does not stipulate specific books to be used for climate change studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-textbooks-are-not-everything\">\u2018Textbooks are not everything\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A representative of the Curriculum Development Center says it has \u201ccarefully considered and designed\u201d the current syllabus to address climate change, the environment and natural resource management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTextbooks are not everything,\u201d says Babu Ram Dhungana, an information officer at the CDC. \u201cIt is a teacher&#8217;s responsibility to find relevant material and information to give students current information.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-pullout-stat alignleft undefined block--pullout-stat\"><p class=\"block--pullout-stat__title\">600,000<\/p><div class=\"block--pullout-stat__content\"><p>The approximate number of children between the ages of 10 and 15 currently enrolled in classes 5 to 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/cehrd.gov.np\/\">in Nepal<\/a>. <\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baing, principal of the school in the Himalayas, says the information gap is filled to some extent by non-profit organisations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcc.org.np\/\">Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/himalayantrust.org.np\/\">Himalayan Trust Nepal<\/a>, who train teachers on how to communicate with students on the subject of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcc.org.np\/\">Kapindra Rai, a programme officer at SPCC<\/a>, the committee works with students and teachers to improve their understanding of environmental conservation. \u201cStudents are active and always eager to know more about what is going on in their area and how they can contribute. But collaboration is limited because of limited resources,\u201d says Rai.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dhungana, the CDC\u2019s information officer, disagrees that there is not enough material to help teachers with education around climate change. \u201cThere is a teacher&#8217;s guide and there is also a training package for teachers,\u201d says Dhungana. \u201cThe source materials are sufficient. And course lessons on climate change are also enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teachers like Aryal, however, say they are often left to search for material on YouTube to use in their classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-many-students-in-the-dark-on-climate-change\">Many students in the dark on climate change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When The Third Pole spoke directly with students, their responses raised questions about the coverage climate change gets under the current curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">13-year-old Ojasvi Shakya, a class 8 student at the <a href=\"https:\/\/school.united.edu.np\/secondary.php\">United School in Lalitpur<\/a>, is keen to learn about environmental issues. \u201cWe need fresh air to breathe and clean water to drink \u2013 that&#8217;s why we all have a responsibility to conserve the environment,\u201d she says. But Shakya has heard little about climate change in the classroom. \u201cWe haven&#8217;t learned about that topic, but we do want to know more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-pullout-stat alignright undefined block--pullout-stat\"><p class=\"block--pullout-stat__title\">27.8% aged under 14<\/p><div class=\"block--pullout-stat__content\"><p>Of Nepal&#8217;s total population of about 30 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/national\/2023\/03\/25\/nepal-is-ageing-as-children-s-share-in-population-shrinks#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20final%20data,percent%20in%20the%202011%20census.\">27.8%<\/a> are aged 14 or under<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/rosa\/media\/11296\/file\/Rising%20to%20the%20Challenge.pdf\">2020 study<\/a> by UNICEF, which surveyed almost 26,000 respondents between the ages of 15 and 24 across eight South Asian countries, found significant gaps in climate education. The study found that 1 in 10 respondents in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka said they \u201cnever\u201d learn about climate change in school. The highest proportion of respondents that could \u201cexplain climate change and global warming\u201d was in Bangladesh, at 50%, whereas the lowest was in Pakistan, at 27%. In the case of Nepal, only 34% of 4,197 students reported that they could explain climate change and global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have compulsory subjects [like] math, English and so on,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/wcn.org.np\/team\/\">Sanjeevani Yonzon Shrestha<\/a>, a conservation and education activist based in Kathmandu. \u201cBut subjects which deal with life on this earth have a very weak presence in our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yonzon\u2019s organisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/wcn.org.np\/\">Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN)<\/a>, runs an environmental education programme called <a href=\"https:\/\/wcn.org.np\/what-we-do\/environmental-education-program\/1\/\">Nepal Prakriti Pathshala<\/a> (Nepal Nature School) which works with over 1,000 schools in Nepal and has conducted about 150 teacher training sessions, with the aim of encouraging responsible natural resource use in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-pull-quote block--pull-quote\"><div class=\"block--pull-quote__wrapper\"><blockquote class=\"block--pull-quote__quote\">We don\u2019t think a compulsory book on environment and climate change is necessary<\/blockquote><cite class=\"block--pull-quote__cite\">Hemraj Khatiwada, head of social studies at Nepal\u2019s Curriculum Development Center<\/cite><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She points out that before the new curriculum came into effect, there was a compulsory subject titled Environment, Population, and Health (EPH) for classes 9 and 10 (ages 14 and 15), but this is no longer available. In 2020-21, the CDC instead introduced Environmental Science as an optional subject for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moecdc.gov.np\/en\/curriculum\">classes 9 to 12<\/a> (ages 14 and 15). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hemraj Khatiwada, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moecdc.gov.np\/en\/organization-chart\">subject head<\/a> of social studies at the CDC, tells The Third Pole: \u201cEven though we don&#8217;t have a dedicated subject, climate change is covered in a different way in books like science and even in English. We don&#8217;t think a compulsory book on environment and climate change is necessary. If students want to study, there is an optional subject.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buddi Sagar Poudel, who leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/mofe.gov.np\/old\/climate\/\">Climate Change Management Division<\/a> (the only government agency dedicated to climate change) at Nepal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofe.gov.np\/\">Ministry of Forest and Environment<\/a> says: \u201cI accept that there is little discussion about education. There is some weakness in coordination, where we thought the concerned ministry will handle it, and they thought we will oversee it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-localising-climate-education-in-nepal\">Localising climate education in Nepal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need more on climate and environmental education because it is one of the most sustainable investments in the future,\u201d says activist Snjeevani Yonzon Shrestha. \u201cWe can do more than we are doing now, and for that we have to use local resources and provide training that is better suited to where the educators are teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yonzon advocates for \u201cplace-based learning\u201d, in which students learn from exploring their surroundings and environment, to communicate the bigger picture to Nepal\u2019s students. This approach was taken at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kopilavalleyschool.edu.np\/\">Kopila Valley School<\/a> in Surkhet, which was started in 2010 by philanthropist and educator <a href=\"https:\/\/thehimalayantimes.com\/kathmandu\/maggie-doyne-bags-cnn-hero-award-2015\">Maggie Doyne<\/a>. \u201cWe allow our students to go out and explore nature and they try to make sense [of it]. Our teachers assist them,\u201d says Doyne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-article-image aligncenter block--article-image block--article-image--article\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><div class=\"block--article-image__column\"><div class=\"hide-expand block--article-image__image\"><img class=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Kopila-valley-school.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Kopila-valley-school-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Kopila-valley-school-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Kopila-valley-school.jpg 2400w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 768px, (max-width: 1024px) 1024px, 2400px\" alt=\"children examining tall plants\"\/><\/div><div class=\"block--article-image__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--article-image__caption\">Students at Kopila Valley School explore the natural surroundings close to their school in Surkhet District to learn about nature (Image: Kopila Valley School)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Kopila-valley-school.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"3 MB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1601\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2400\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doyne agrees that the state-set curriculum lags behind when it comes to addressing the urgent need for environmental education in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we really want our children to grow up with a sense of responsibility towards the nature they are living in, we can teach by letting them explore the surrounding environment,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIntroduction to environmental issues through fear is what almost all education systems are doing \u2013 [children] are growing up hating nature,\u201d Doyne argues. \u201cAs an adult, we can show how we interact with nature and how we can appreciate it.
