{"id":20126447,"date":"2024-01-11T23:27:31","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T17:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thethirdpole.net\/?p=126447"},"modified":"2024-01-27T22:27:30","modified_gmt":"2024-01-27T16:57:30","slug":"rising-tides-ruined-fields-show-how-bangladeshs-farmers-grapple-with-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/rising-tides-ruined-fields-show-how-bangladeshs-farmers-grapple-with-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising tides, ruined fields show how Bangladesh\u2019s farmers grapple with climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Farmers in Bangladesh\u2019s coastal region say a changing coastline, erratic rainfall, high temperatures and rising sea levels as a result of climate change pose a threat to the livelihoods of millions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI sowed lentils in 2022, but I was not able to harvest the crop as incessant rain wreaked havoc on my field during the chaitra [last] month of the Bengali calendar, which is the peak season of lentil cultivation,\u201d says Makhen Rakhine, a 35-year-old Indigenous farmer in the coastal sub-district of Rangabali, part of Patuakhali district in south-central Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Makhen Rakhine hoped to make a good return on the crop she sows on an acre of leased land. But rains during the dry season in March and April 2023 wreaked havoc on her&nbsp; finances. In the past, Patuakhali district did not experience rains during the dry season. But in recent years, rains are far <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pstu.ac.bd\/files\/publications\/1538978544.pdf\">more frequent<\/a>, leaving farmers with heavy losses. Not only are they forced to change cropping patterns because of climatic variability, they say cyclones, salinity and tidal surges together deal a heavy blow to production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-accordion block--accordion\"><span class=\"block--accordion__title\">Millions living under threat<\/span><div class=\"block--accordion__content\"><div class=\"block--accordion__content__inner\">\n<p>Bangladesh\u2019s coastal region has diverse <a href=\"https:\/\/en.banglapedia.org\/index.php\/Biodiversity\">ecosystems<\/a>. It covers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/287470849_Climate_change_and_coastal_zone_of_Bangladesh_Vulnerability_resilience_and_adaptability\">about 20% of the country\u2019s total landmass and over 30% of its arable<\/a> land. The impacts of climate change are severely affecting <a href=\"https:\/\/thefinancialexpress.com.bd\/views\/views\/impact-of-climate-change-on-agricultural-1518619832\">agriculture<\/a>, fishing and in turn scores of livelihoods. With the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/sea-levels-rise-bangladeshi-islanders-must-decide-between-keeping-water-out-or-letting\">sea level<\/a> projected to rise 0.4 to 1.5 metres (nearly five feet) by 2100, some scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/guest-blog\/the-unfolding-tragedy-of-climate-change-in-bangladesh\/\">say<\/a> 50 million people could be displaced.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-plague-of-rain-and-pests\">A plague of rain and pests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with The Third Pole, Makhen Rakhine expresses worries about pests, which \u201care becoming more aggressive nowadays as their attacks damage crops\u201d. (Image: Rafiqul Islam \/ The Third Pole)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20230924_Bangladesh-coastal-regions-farmers-spraying-paddy-field_Rafiqul-Islam_TheThirdPole.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"2 MB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1707\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2560\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Makhen Rakhine says farmers already battling financial hardships due to erratic weather patterns now have to spend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailystar.net\/news\/bangladesh\/agriculture\/news\/dollar-crisis-hurts-pesticide-imports-may-hit-crop-output-3247156\">more <\/a>to produce crops due to the need to control pests and use greater amounts of fertiliser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salma Begum, a 40-year-old farmer from Rangabali, highlights a similar issue. Salma Begum\u2019s rice and lentil crops planted with a farmers\u2019 cooperative 2022 were damaged by pests and rains.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212420922001248\">2022 study<\/a> revealed that extreme temperatures and erratic rainfall resulted in increased pest attacks on rice crops. Furthermore, excessive salinity in the soil has forced farmers to increase the amount of fertiliser they use in paddy fields every year, resulting in the organic matter content in their fields deteriorating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahmud Hasan, chairman of the local council for Maududi Union, a grassroots administrative unit in Rangabali, said the coastal region is now witnessing overall excessive rainfall during the monsoon and excessive drought during the dry season. The rainfall occurring in the dry season damages crops, but does not linger. In the coastal areas, a drought-like situation is created during the dry season due to the lack of fresh water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFarmers were forced to sow Aman [the country\u2019s second most sown rice variety] two times this year, [as the] first time, the rice seedlings were damaged due to excessive rainfall. Pulse and watermelon cultivation gets hit hard during the dry season due to the lack of available fresh water,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the winter, Hasan says, fresh groundwater levels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2071-1050\/14\/11\/6703\">drop drastically<\/a> due to low rainfall, and that is why farmers are compelled to spend more money installing artificial water sources to irrigate their fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-growing-climate-disasters\">Growing climate disasters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2212420919310994#:~:text=Coastal%20districts%20of%20Bangladesh%20are,disasters%20hit%20the%20coastal%20belt.\">disasters are common in the coastal region of Bangladesh<\/a>, which is prone to cyclones, floods and tidal surges, and saltwater intrusion. I reached the shore later, via another boat,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shahin Bepari, a resident of Char Gangamati in Patuakhali, agrees, and says the wind at sea has become stiffer, and fishing boats are overturned \u201cmany times by strong winds, putting the life of fishermen at risk\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coastal flooding also severely affects the people living in the country\u2019s 580 km-wide coastal region. A 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/results\/2022\/08\/24\/helping-bangladish-protect-its-coastal-communities-from-tidal-flooding-and-storm-surges\">World Bank study<\/a> estimated that 8 million people in the country were vulnerable to inundation depths greater than 3 metres due to cyclonic storm surges. It forecast the number will increase to 13.5 million people by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rakib Hossain, 40, a fisher from Bhuiyan Kanda in Maudubi Union, says they face annual coastal flooding. Because of cyclones and floods, we have to suspend our fishing for around two months per year. During these periods [the early summer in April\/May and the late rainy season in October\/November], we suffer a lot trying to cover family expenses,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eminent water expert Ainnun Nishat, currently professor emeritus at BRAC University, expresses the fear that super cyclones, which would lead to waves up to 16 feet (nearly 5 metres) high, may hit the Bangladesh coast in the near future due to climate change. \u201cWe must get ready to deal with these cyclones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dynamic-coastal-morphology\">Dynamic coastal morphology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the greatest challenge for the people living in coastal Bangladesh is the changing coastline itself. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalrivers.org\/where-we-work\/asia\/ganges-brahmaputra-meghna\/\">Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna (GBM)<\/a> basin is where rivers flowing from China, Nepal, Bhutan and India meet in Bangladesh, just a hundred kilometres from the coast. Largely flowing from the young Himalayan mountains, these rivers carry enormous amounts of sediment. A <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-030-73592-0_9\">2021 study<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cegisbd.com\/\">Center for Environmental and Geographic and Information Services (CEGIS)<\/a> \u2013 a not-for-profit government organisation that reports to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mowr.gov.bd\/\">Ministry of Water Resources<\/a> \u2013 estimated that the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers discharge about 1 trillion cubic metres of water and up to 1 billion tonnes of sediment into the Bay of Bengal annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are many big transboundary rivers, including the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna, which carry a huge volume of silt and deposit this in the Meghna estuary, bringing dynamic changes in coastal morphology,\u201d Maminul Haque Sarker, senior adviser with CEGIS, tells the Third Pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-article-image aligncenter block--article-image block--article-image--article\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><div class=\"block--article-image__column\"><div class=\"hide-expand block--article-image__image\"><img class=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20230924_Bangladesh-coastal-regions-silt-from-Himalayan-rivers_Rafiqul-Islam_TheThirdPole.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20230924_Bangladesh-coastal-regions-silt-from-Himalayan-rivers_Rafiqul-Islam_TheThirdPole-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20230924_Bangladesh-coastal-regions-silt-from-Himalayan-rivers_Rafiqul-Islam_TheThirdPole-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20230924_Bangladesh-coastal-regions-silt-from-Himalayan-rivers_Rafiqul-Islam_TheThirdPole.jpg 2560w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 768px, (max-width: 1024px) 1024px, 2560px\" alt=\"empty coastline\"\/><\/div><div class=\"block--article-image__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--article-image__caption\">Massive amounts of silt carried by Himalayan rivers has slowly extended parts of the Bangladesh coastline over the years (Image: Rafiqul Islam \/ The Third Pole)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20230924_Bangladesh-coastal-regions-silt-from-Himalayan-rivers_Rafiqul-Islam_TheThirdPole.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"1 MB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1707\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2560\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to this annual flow of sediment, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2667010020300019\">2020 research paper<\/a> based on satellite data calculated there was a 1.15% increase in land area between 1989 and 2018 in the coastal region, a net gain of 591 square kilometres. The coastal area in Bangladesh increased from 28,836 square kilometres (56.06% of the country\u2019s total land area) to 29,427 square kilometres (57.21%) in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs Bangladesh receives a huge volume of sediment every year from the Himalayan rivers, its land size is continuously increasing,\u201d Kabir Uddin, co-author of the study, told The Third Pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study suggests it can be used to develop long-term planning for \u201cresettlement, restoration, conservation, and management of the ecosystems and their services across the northern Bay of Bengal\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As land expands, erosion continues to eat away at the coastline. According to a 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S096456912030315X\">coastal erosion vulnerability assessment<\/a>, about 11% of the coastline has \u201cvery high vulnerability\u201d to coastal erosion, while the areas of \u201chigh vulnerability\u201d are 24%. During a recent visit to Kuakata in Patuakhali, The Third Pole saw that erosion along 7 kilometres of the area\u2019s coastline had devoured businesses, hotels, reserve forests, homesteads and parks.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, the Kuakata National Park was visible near the Kuakata sea beach. Today, however, only two pillars of its entrance remain visible. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/bangladesh\/blog\/green-kuakata-youth-led-initiative-conserve-biodiversity-and-ecosystem-services\">Two-thirds of it<\/a> was swallowed by the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An additional 40 hectares of forested land, too, is eroded every year, with a huge number of trees of different species <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailystar.net\/news\/bangladesh\/news\/75000-trees-lost-erosion-every-year-3365261\">killed and uprooted<\/a>, a local forest guard with the Patuakhali forest department told The Third Pole. The beach is now strewn with scores of uprooted or damaged trees.\u00a0 (Image: Rafiqul Islam \/ The Third Pole)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/20230925_Bangladesh-coastal-regions-dead-trees-in-Kuakata_Rafiqul-Islam_TheThirdPole.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"2 MB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1707\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2560\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohammad Tanzid, a resident of Char Gangamati in Kuakata, says erosion is taking a heavy toll on their locality. \u201cAbout 250 metres of land along the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tbsnews.net\/environment\/kuakata-beach-erosion-takes-bad-turn-156943\">Kuakata coastline<\/a> has gone under seawater in the last five years,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate impacts \u2013 as well as human intervention \u2013 are adding to these changes. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/lib.icimod.org\/record\/36322\">report<\/a> by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icimod.org\/\">ICIMOD<\/a>) on water, ice, society and ecosystems in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, the supply of water from the Himalayan region will peak in 2050. The decline in water will mean there will be less sediment as well. At the same time, sea levels are rising. Nonetheless, the country seems fixated on short-term solutions that may be adding to the problem by restricting sedimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SM Shahidul Islam, director general of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bwdb.portal.gov.bd\/\">Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB)<\/a>, tells The Third Pole that, with Bangladesh starting a mega project to reclaim land from the sea using silt deposited in the Bay of Bengal, erosion will, in fact, be accelerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address coastal erosion, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhakatribune.com\/bangladesh\/nation\/308726\/1.5m-people-in-danger-as-embankments-in-158-points\">BWDB is putting geobags<\/a> in erosion-prone areas along the coastline, he said, and coastal embankments are being elevated in Patuakhali, Noakhali, Bhola, Barguna and Bagerhat to protect local people and their properties during cyclone, coastal flooding and storm
