But while they shared an aircraft, their reasons to be in Dubai were entirely different. The dignitaries were travelling to negotiate climate change mitigation with world leaders, whereas Prem was leaving his home because the climate has already changed too much. He is from Bardiya district in midwestern Nepal\u2019s Lumbini province, where communities have long faced drawn-out droughts during the monsoon and winter seasons, and heavy rains at harvest time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prem is one of thousands of Nepali economic migrants who find employment in the Gulf. \u201cMy daughter was just a one-year-old baby when I came here [to the UAE] for the first time. She is 11 now,\u201d says the 34-year-old. Initially, Prem worked as a cleaner. Now he works as a helper in a vehicle repair shop in Al Barsha, Dubai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to stay with my family and find livelihood in agriculture,\u201d continues Prem. \u201cBut these days, weather patterns are not in our favour; agriculture is in a declining trend. How can I stay home?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-accordion block--accordion\"><span class=\"block--accordion__title\">Nepali workers overseas<\/span><div class=\"block--accordion__content\"><div class=\"block--accordion__content__inner\">\n<p>Around <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20230718\/fc3b4929d1d5448db23963af9aa5de7b\/c.html\">500,000<\/a> Nepalis enter the job market each year, but the country generates jobs for approximately 80,000 only. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the seven months leading up to February 2024, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/en.himalpress.com\/over-2000-leaving-for-foreign-employment-every-day\/\">2,000<\/a> Nepalis entered the international labour market in search of employment opportunities every day. In the fiscal year 2022-2023, a record high of more than <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20230718\/fc3b4929d1d5448db23963af9aa5de7b\/c.html\">771,000<\/a> work permits were issued by Nepal\u2019s foreign employment department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the International Organization for Migration (the UN\u2019s migration agency) referenced Nepal\u2019s population and housing census of 2011 to note that almost <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.iom.int\/books\/migration-nepal-country-profile-2019\">50%<\/a> of households had a member who had either worked overseas, or was still there. A 2023 World Bank estimate suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knomad.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publication-doc\/migration_development_brief_39.pdf\">27%<\/a> of Nepal\u2019s GDP comes from payments sent home by migrant workers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Though economic migration is a decades-old phenomenon in Nepal, researchers say that in recent years, extreme weather events and climate change-induced disasters are adding to the factors pushing people out of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20113900\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iids.org.np\/images\/publications\/e0410d77b3572b03d5ee22b6b7f38278.pdf\">reasons<\/a> [for Nepalis] to go to foreign countries are socio-economic conditions and a lack of employment opportunities here in Nepal,\u201d says Amina Maharjan, a migration specialist at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development. \u201cLately, however, we are seeing people choose labour or educational migration as an adaptive measure to post-disaster economic burdens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maharjan\u2019s conclusions are mirrored by a 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equidem.org\/assets\/downloads\/14884_-_Equidem_Unjust_Transitions_Report_2023_%281%29.pdf\">report<\/a> by Equidem, a human rights and labour rights non-profit: \u201cWorkers interviewed by Equidem migrated for employment to the UAE from the Philippines, Mozambique, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal \u2013 five of the ten countries most affected by climate change between 2000 and 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-climate-factor\">The climate factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunder Pandit, 26, now lives in Sydney, Australia. But he often wonders where he would be today if the massive flash flood on Nepal\u2019s Melamchi River had not occurred in June 2021. The disaster claimed at least <a href=\"https:\/\/documents1.worldbank.org\/curated\/en\/099600006212237293\/pdf\/P16057809e269a0cf096ab044bc77400259.pdf\">17 lives<\/a> and swept away infrastructure and hundreds of houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20081212\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat flood pushed me to choose migration in the name of education, but it is not what I wanted or dreamed of,\u201d says Pandit, talking to The Third Pole over the phone. \u201cThe flood swept away our newly established hospitality business and trout farm, where we had invested around NPR8 million [USD 60,300] by taking loans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Melamchi flood originated in eastern Nepal\u2019s rural Helambu region, where scores of homes were <a href=\"https:\/\/documents1.worldbank.org\/curated\/en\/099600006212237293\/pdf\/P16057809e269a0cf096ab044bc77400259.pdf\">destroyed<\/a>. One of them belonged to Pandit and his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pandit was fresh out of college, where he studied hospitality management. He had finished an internship in China and was working in a Nepali tourism hotspot, the city of Pokhara, to gain experience. He then returned home to the Sindhupalchok&nbsp;municipality where he launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/helamburiverside\/\">Helambu Riverside Resort<\/a> with his brother, in their village of Chanaute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything was going great; we were using local products, and the fish farm was also there,\u201d Pandit says. \u201cWithin a year, our business took off and already provided employment to 12 locals. But at a time when we were planning to go big, the flood hit hard, and I ended up here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the environment department published its latest vulnerability and risk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofe.gov.np\/resources\/study-reports-3115\">assessment<\/a>. It categorises Sindhupalchok as a \u201chigh-impact\u201d area when it comes to climate-induced disasters, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icimod.org\/article\/the-melamchi-flood-disaster\/\">reports<\/a> suggest the 2021 Melamchi flood was climate-induced. \u201cThe Melamchi flood pushed us out from our village,\u201d Pandit says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-article-image aligncenter block--article-image block--article-image--article\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><div class=\"block--article-image__column\"><div class=\"hide-expand block--article-image__image\"><img class=\"lazy\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nepali-migrant-workers_Tanka-Dhakal-scaled.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nepali-migrant-workers_Tanka-Dhakal-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nepali-migrant-workers_Tanka-Dhakal-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nepali-migrant-workers_Tanka-Dhakal-scaled.jpg 2560w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 768px, (max-width: 1024px) 1024px, 2560px\" alt=\"group of men with luggage\"\/><\/div><div class=\"block--article-image__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--article-image__caption\">Ram Bindo Yadav (second from left) and other Nepali migrant workers land back in Kathmandu after flying home from Qatar (Image: Tanka Dhakal)<\/div><\/div><\/div><meta itemprop=\"contentUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nepali-migrant-workers_Tanka-Dhakal-scaled.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"contentSize\" content=\"730 KB\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"1920\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"2560\"\/><meta itemprop=\"author\"\/><meta itemprop=\"representativeOfPage\" content=\"true\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty five migrant workers were interviewed by The Third Pole for this report. One of them is 50-year-old Ram Bindo Yadav, who was waiting for a bus from Kathmandu&#8217;s main airport to his village in Siraha district on a late January afternoon. He used to farm on rented land, \u201cbut in recent years, farming became difficult; there is no irrigation, and we don\u2019t get rainfall when it is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ram Bindo was returning from Qatar and one of many migrant workers catching a bus home. Bhuran Yadav, 43, came forward to share his story: \u201cMy family\u2019s livelihood depends on agriculture. Uncertain rainfall and frequent droughts in the monsoon season and winter are some of the main reasons I went to Qatar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src='https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/16946120\/embed' title='Interactive or visual content' class='flourish-embed-iframe' frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='width:100%;height:600px;' sandbox='allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation'><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Bhuran Yadav\u2019s village is in south-eastern Nepal\u2019s Shahidnagar municipality, Dhanusha district, where most depend on agriculture. \u201cBecause of this, almost every household has at least one member in a Gulf country,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dhanusha and Siraha are <a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/money\/2023\/08\/07\/drought-parches-nepal-s-agricultural-heartland\">both<\/a> highly vulnerable when it comes to climate-induced disasters. They are situated in the Tarai plains that run between the Himalayas and Nepal\u2019s southern border, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/08\/01\/most-of-tarai-is-reeling-under-unusual-mid-monsoon-drought\">witnessing<\/a> back-to-back droughts. And at other times, prolonged, <a href=\"https:\/\/kathmandupost.com\/national\/2021\/10\/20\/unexpected-autumn-rains-dampen-good-paddy-harvest-hopes\">unseasonal<\/a> rains are destroying harvests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-farm-to-foreign-land\">From farm to foreign land<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the environment department&#8217;s aforementioned 2021 vulnerability and risk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofe.gov.np\/resources\/study-reports-3115\">assessment<\/a>, natural hazards (mainly floods and landslides) are one of the major driving forces behind economic migration in Nepal: \u201cThe majority of the labour force depends on agriculture and this sector is badly impacted by recurrent floods, droughts, and landslides. As a result, the agricultural labour force, particularly the young, tends to move away from the agriculture sector and explore employment opportunities in the service sector and labour market outside of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Third Pole spoke to the migration researcher and National Network for Safe Migration president, Chiranjivi Baral. He agrees that \u2013 alongside other socioeconomic factors \u2013 climate change-induced disasters are forcing people to choose labour migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were talking with sheep herders in Mustang [in northern Nepal], and they said their friends are in the Gulf who used to work in pastureland,\u201d Baral recalls. \u201cAccording to them, the reason was the impact of not having enough snow and rain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"20088450\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Most farmers, from the mountains to the southern plains of Terai, are experiencing the impacts of a changing climate in their day-to-day lives. Findings from the 2021 national agricultural census <a href=\"https:\/\/agricensusnepal.gov.np\/upload_file\/files\/post\/1694251173_1462648254_%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B7%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%9F%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%AF%20%E0%A4%95%E0%A5%83%E0%A4%B7%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%97%E0%A4%A3%E0%A4%A8%E0%A4%BE%20%E0%A5%A8%E0%A5%A6%E0%A5%AD%E0%A5%AE%20(%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B0-%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%82%E0%A4%95%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B7%E0%A5%87%E0%A4%AA).indd.pdf\">support<\/a> this: of the farming families who know about climate change, 91% said it impacted their agricultural activities, of which 85% said it decreased their yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Prem from Bardiya still wishes to return home to make his living. \u201cFarming is what we did as a source of livelihood there, and I have hope that there will be a way to make it happen again, because I want to spend time
