Authorities hailed the completion of the US$7.7 billion Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat state as an answer to the water, irrigation and power needs of millions of people in the vast, parched regions of western India. <\/div>\n
\nThe Sardar Sarovar is the centerpiece of the multibillion-dollar Narmada Valley development project that taps the Narmada, India’s fifth-largest river, through a series of dams, reservoirs and canals. <\/div>\n
