The short-necked oil beetle was found by an amateur entomologist during a wildlife survey on National Trust land.<\/div>\n
\nThe species, also known as Meloe brevicollis, gets its name from the highly toxic oil secretions it produces to ward off predators.<\/div>\n
\n
\nIntensive farming practices in Britain have decimated the oil beetle population; the insect was last recorded in Sussex, along the south-eastern coast, in 1948.<\/div>\n
