"A man with a decoration company in east China’s Anhui Province spotted a ‘big white animal’" on August 19, and filmed it with a digital camera, China Daily said, citing Wang Kexiong, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Hydrobiology . <\/p>\n

The institute confirmed the animal in the footage was indeed the Yangtze River dolphin, known in Chinese as the "baiji", the report said. <\/p>\n

"Many people have believed that baiji is extinct and this finding brings us a sliver of hope," China Daily reported Wang Ding, a leading expert on the species, as saying. <\/p>\n
