In December 2006 a six-week survey of the river found no sign of the dolpin, concluding the baiji was "functionally extinct". However, in
\nAugust 2007 a man in east China’s Anhui province videotaped what he claimed was a baiji.<\/p>\n

The researchers from the EDGE program, a part of the London Zoological Society, will return from China in two weeks with their results,
\nenvironmental website mongabay.com has reported.<\/p>\n

During the past two decades, conservationists say, the baiji suffered greatly from overfishing, pollution, increased boat traffic and the
\nconstruction of dams.<\/p>\n
