Rik Leemans and colleagues from Wageningen University in the Netherlands modelled the future effects of carbon plantations up the<\/p>\n

end of the century, Science Daily reports.<\/p>\n

They found that land use issues limit the benefits of forestry projects in the short term, but the potential of forests to act as carbon sinks in the long term should not to be underestimated.<\/p>\n

"The potential for the coming decades is limited due to the limited amount of available land and the long period needed to compensate for
\nemissions related to the establishment of the plantations," Leemans was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
