The river, China’s third largest, stretches more than 1,000 kilometres
\nthrough Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. However, the
\nreport, by the country’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) —
\nformerly the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA),
\nfound only Shandong had met targets on treating industrial waste.<\/p>\n

The Huai was still "plagued with ammonia and nitrogen", the report
\nsaid. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), a measure of water pollution,
\nalso was in excess of targets.<\/p>\n

There are 191 urban waste water treatment plants along the river, the
\nreport said, which together are able to purify about 2.7 billion
\ntonnes of waste every year. But according to Xinhua news agency, an
\naverage of 4.4 billion tonnes of waste is discharged into the river
\nevery year.<\/p>\n
