The plants would be replaced by larger, more efficient plants, the Xinhua new agency report said, saving 7.1 million tonnes of coal and
\nreducing carbon dioxide emissions by 14.2 million tonnes.<\/p>\n

Zhao Yinong, an official with the State Energy Administration, said the closures accounted for 36% of the country’s target on saving
\nenergy and reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.<\/p>\n

At the end of 2007, the report said, China’s total installed generation capacity was 713 million kW.<\/p>\n
