"Penguins are in trouble," Dee Boersma, the report’s lead author, was quoted as saying. "They certainly are canaries in the coal mine."<\/p>\n

Boersma tracked the world’s largest breeding colony of Magellanic penguins for 25 years and observed a 22% decrease in the population of the penguins at the site.<\/p>\n

Global warming is one of the causes of the penguins’ problems, she said. They also are threatened by oil pollution, depletion of
\nfisheries, becoming entangled in fishing nets and coastal development that destroys breeding habitats.<\/p>\n
