Around 1,400 of the world’s 1,590 pandas live in Sichuan, the report
\nsaid. The earthquake destroyed critical habitat, including 8% of the
\nWolong research centre.<\/p>\n

Wei Fuwen, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Reuters that
\npandas in the wild had a larger population and a higher reproduction
\nrate than previously thought.<\/p>\n

"Has it reached an evolutionary dead-end? I think the answer to that
\nis ‘No’," Wei was reported as saying.<\/p>\n
