The okapi, which has stripes like a zebra and a black tongue like a giraffe, was last seen in the Virunga National Park, one of the last remaining three areas the animals are believed to inhabit.<\/p>\n

The destructive 1998-2003 war in Congo, heavy poaching, corruption and mismanagement of the reserve all present a great threat to the okapi population. There are also fears of a local market for okapi meat<\/p>\n
