Cities cover just 2% of the planet’s land area but dictate 75% of the
\nuse of the world’s natural resources, Ahmed Djoghlaf, executive
\nsecretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, told Reuters.<\/p>\n

"This growth of cities is not in developed countries, but in
\ndeveloping countries where there is still biodiversity. We want to
\nmake sure that this growth is not at the expense of biodiversity," he
\nadded.<\/p>\n

Half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, according to the
\nUN. That proportion is expected to rise to two-thirds by 2050.<\/p>\n
