{"id":27479,"date":"2008-10-14T13:04:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-14T13:04:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-05-14T18:37:48","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T18:37:48","slug":"2479-drier-peatlands-add-to-warming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/uncategorized\/2479-drier-peatlands-add-to-warming\/","title":{"rendered":"Drier peatlands \u201cadd to warming\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In their computer models, the Japanese scientists found that peatlands &#8212; concentrated in high-latitude areas such as Canada, Russia and Alaska &ndash; will become increasingly drier as global temperatures increase and more carbon dioxide (CO2) is released.<\/p>\n<p>\nPeat, which covers about 2% of global land mass, is the accumulation of partially decayed vegetation in very wet places. Because of the low rates of carbon breakdown in cold, waterlogged soils, peatlands store large amounts of carbon.<br \/>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><br atmosphere, which will further worsen global warming,&rdquo; said Takeshi Ise of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology.<\/meta><br \/>\n<\/meta><br \/>\n<\/meta><br
