\nThe Canadian government faces widespread criticism for rising greenhouse-gas emissions, high per-capita trash production and per-capita water usage second only to the United States. Emissions linked to climate change have risen, due partly to development of the Alberta oil sands.<\/p>\n

"Without serious attention to environmental sustainability," the study said, "Canada puts its society and its quality of life at risk."<\/p>\n

Len Coad, a Conference Board director, said: "We are among the world leaders in managing our forests, our air quality is good overall and we have made progress using energy efficiently. But we generate far too much waste, we still use water as though we have an unlimited supply and our past record on greenhouse gas emissions is terrible."<\/p>\n
