However, if you  spend time with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jellyfish\">jellyfish<\/a> long enough you will see that it is a very fascinating creature that has many facets.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed  it has, but &ldquo;nuclear protester&rdquo; may not have leapt to mind immediately.  These strange sea-dwellers &ndash; a form of plankton that has been  propelling around the world&rsquo;s oceans for hundreds of millions of years &ndash;  have recently been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/environment\/jellyfish-force-shutdown-of-power-plants-20110711-1haa6.html\">disrupting the operations of power plants<\/a> in several countries (even forcing reactors offline) in a way that some environmentalists can only dream of.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Nuclear power plants,&rdquo; as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/06\/29\/us-britain-nuclear-jellyfish-idUSTRE75S56D20110629\">Reuters<\/a><span>  explains, &ldquo;draw water from nearby seas or rivers to cool down their  reactors, but if the filters which keep out marine animals and seaweed  are clogged, the station shuts down to maintain temperature and safety  standards.&rdquo; In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/06\/29\/us-britain-nuclear-jellyfish-idUSTRE75S56D20110629\">United Kingdom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/06\/24\/idINIndia-57889320110624\">Japan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.israelnationalnews.com\/News\/News.aspx\/145479\">Israel<\/a>, jellyfish have been doing much of the clogging. (See photos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/articles\/177633\/20110711\/jellyfish-millions-jellyfish-invade-nuclear-reactors-japan-israel-scotland-torness-2011-power-plant.htm\">here<\/a><span>.)<\/p>\n<p>With  a bit of calm and warm weather, one marine biologist told the news  agency, jellyfish can turn up inshore in high numbers &ndash; as they did in  late June at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torness_Nuclear_Power_Station\">Torness<\/a><span>  plant on Scotland&rsquo;s east coast. And, say scientists, such events could  become more common as the planet warms, as oceans become more acidic and  as fishing activity increases. (Overfishing of small ones that feed off  jellyfish leaves the &ldquo;jellies&rdquo; less exposed to natural predators and  gives them more room to reproduce, according to the UK&rsquo;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mba.ac.uk\/about.php\">Marine Biological Association<\/a>.)<br \/>\n<span><br \/>\nDespite  their creation of messy work for nuclear plant workers who have to  remove their &ldquo;gelatinous and sticky&rdquo; bodies &ndash; and their reputation for  inflicting nasty stings on humans &#8212; the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/animals.about.com\/od\/cnidarians\/a\/tenfactsjellyfi.htm\">jellyfish<\/a> aren&rsquo;t thought to cause any radiation hazards. A spokesman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.com\/the-edf-group-42667.html\">EDF<\/a>, the French company that runs the Torness plant, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-13971005\">BBC Scotland<\/a><span>:  &ldquo;At no time was there any danger to the public. There are no  radiological aspects associated with this event and there has been no  impact to the environment.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>No  environmental impact apart from countless thousands of dead &ldquo;jellies&rdquo;,  that is. In the oceans, they are both food and finders of food, with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.helium.com\/items\/702266-the-importance-of-jellyfish-in-the-oceans-food-chain\">role to play in deep-sea ecology<\/a>. Outside the marine food chain, of course, some species are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jellyfish#Culinary\">harvested for food<\/a> in China and other parts of Asia.
