Indigenous tribes have spoken out against the highly-controversial Chinese-funded Gibe III dam in Ethiopia.<\/div>\n

The mega-dam in the south-west of Ethiopia on the Omo River is the third in a series of hydroelectric projects in the region and is being built with help of US$500 million from Chinese banks<\/a>. <\/div>\n

As well as providing electricity, supporters say it will regulate seasonal flooding but opponents say it will deprive local inhabitants in the Omo valley of their traditional flood-retreat farming and livelihood.

In a video released by the NGO International Rivers<\/a> and recently translated for Chinese speakers<\/a>, a woman from the local Kara tribe says: <\/p>\n

“These things keep us busy thinking and talking. We discuss if this happens, where do we go? Where do we move? How do we feed our children? Is the government joking, or are they really going to move us from our home, from our land?  What we know is we just have to wait and see what is going to happen with this river. If the government comes they should just kill us here, next to our river.”<\/p>\n
