Analysis of 650,000 satellite images,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/342\/6160\/850\">published in the journal Science<\/a>, reveal the extent of loss and recovery &ndash; Brazil&rsquo;s success in the Amazon is offset by deforestation in Indonesia, Malaysia, Paraguay, Bolivia, Zambia and Angola. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/earthenginepartners.appspot.com\/science-2013-global-forest\">colour-coded&nbsp;maps<\/a> below&nbsp;show changes from ten areas around the world: green is forest cover, red is lost forest, blue is forest gained and pink is forests both lost and gained in the period.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/108\/brazil.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Brazil<\/strong><br \/>\nDeforestation in the Amazon decreased between 2004 and 2012, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2013\/nov\/15\/deforestation-amazon-jungle-rising-again\">between August 2012 and July 2013 it increased by 28%<\/a>. However, the deforestation, driven in part by loggers turning forest into ranch land for cattle, is still at its second lowest level ever.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/110\/bolivia.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nBolivia<\/strong><br \/>\nThe country (on the west in this photo) may not be well-known internationally as a deforestation hotspot. But its rainforests, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2010\/mar\/11\/greenwash-noel-kempff-forests\">have been the focus of a UN scheme to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation<\/a>, have been being chopped down at a frightening rate. The rate of deforestation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2010\/may\/27\/un-forest-protection-redd\">increased by 4.4% between 2000 and 2005<\/a>. Soya production and cattle ranching<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S026483771200124X\">are two of the main causes<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/114\/alaska.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nAlaska<\/strong><br \/>\nThe wildnerness of the Alaska interior region&#8217;s coniferous forests glows bright red from above.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/116\/canada.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nCanada<\/strong><br \/>\nTwo-thirds of the country&#8217;s boreal deforestation has taken place in the Saskatchewan province, as the bright red cluster here shows. Agriculture, mining and attendant road-building&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cfs.nrcan.gc.ca\/pages\/391\">are the big causes<\/a>.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/118\/uk.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nUK<\/strong><br \/>\nBoth Wales and Scotland have suffered deforestation between 2000 and 2012 &ndash; England has too, but less obviously so because it lost most of its forest cover many centuries ago &ndash; but it is notable that there are flashes of red even in national parks, such as the Yorkshire Dales.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/120\/france.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nFrance<\/strong><br \/>\nCyclone Klaus is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2009\/jan\/30\/france-natural-disasters\">largely to blame for destroying a huge swathe of the Landes forest<\/a>, south of Bordeaux, which glows bright red here. The blue spots&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2012\/jul\/31\/france-landes-forest-replanting-scheme\">reflect replanting efforts<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/122\/indonesia.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nIndonesia<\/strong><br \/>\nPerhaps the most infamous deforestation spot on the planet (lower left island on this map), despite a&nbsp;moratorium on the felling of rainforest, introduced in 2011. Palm oil plantations have largely been blamed for the country&#8217;s deforestation &ndash; which has made the country one of the world&#8217;s biggest carbon emitters. The country is losing around the same amount of forest as Brazil annually, despite being only a quarter of the size.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/124\/russia.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nRussia<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Russian far east could be entirely logged by the end of the next decade, according to a study by the Beijing Forestry University.&nbsp;As these images show, there has been some substantial afforestation, too.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/126\/cambodia_n_vietnam.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nCambodia and Vietnam<\/strong><br \/>\nBoth countries were highlighted in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2013\/may\/20\/deforestation-south-east-asia\">a report earlier this year as suffering a &#8216;plague of deforestation&#8217;<\/a>, driven by illegal logging.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/cd.live\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/128\/australia.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nAustralia<\/strong><br \/>\nWestern Australia was one of the first parts of the continent to lose its trees, in the nineteenth century,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jpe.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/5\/1\/109.full\">a trend that accelerated due to farming in the middle of the twentieth century<\/a>, but there have still been deforestation hotspots
