{"id":31737,"date":"2014-02-20T11:41:00","date_gmt":"2014-02-20T11:41:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-05-14T18:44:14","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T18:44:14","slug":"6737-south-north-water-transfer-project-not-sustainable-says-chinese-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/uncategorized\/6737-south-north-water-transfer-project-not-sustainable-says-chinese-official\/","title":{"rendered":"South-North water transfer project not sustainable, says Chinese official"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]-->  <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>\n \n  Normal\n  0\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  false\n  false\n  false\n  \n  EN-US\n  JA\n  X-NONE\n  \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n  \n  \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n  \n<\/xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]-->  <!--[if gte mso 10]>\n\n\n<style>\n \/* Style Definitions *\/\ntable.MsoNormalTable\n\t{mso-style-name:\"Table Normal\";\n\tmso-style-parent:\"\";\n\tfont-size:12.0pt;}\n<\/style>\n\n\n<![endif]--><\/p>\n<p>The US$62 billion South-North Water Transfer Project would be rendered irrelevant if one-third of buildings in Beijing could collect more rainwater and recycle more wastewater, according to a Chinese ministerial official. <\/p>\n<p>The remarks made by Qiu Baoxing, vice minister of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.h2o-china.com\/html\/2014\/02\/125350_1.shtml\">February issue of <\/a><i><a href=\"https:\/\/news.h2o-china.com\/html\/2014\/02\/125350_1.shtml\">Water &amp; Wastewater<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.h2o-china.com\/html\/2014\/02\/125350_1.shtml\">Engineering<\/a>, <\/i>represents a rare government opinion against one of China&rsquo;s greatest engineering feats. Construction of the diversion project, which officially started in 2002, is considered controversial for its high cost, environmental impact and massive displacement of local population.<\/p>\n<p>The vast water diversion scheme consists of three canal systems, with the eastern route already supplying water to Shandong province in December.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As the scale of the project gets bigger and the distance gets longer, it is more and more difficult to divert water,&rdquo; Qiu writes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Recycled water could replace diverted water. Most Chinese cities are capable of finding more water if we develop water desalination technology and collect more rain water,&rdquo; he adds.<\/p>\n<p>According to Qiu, the diversion project has also resulted in new pollution along its routes. He says diverted water has led to the leaking of residues in local pipelines, a problem that is &ldquo;very difficult&rdquo; to solve.<\/p>\n<p>China is already grappling to clean up serious pollution along the central route of the diversion project, which is designed to start operation in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The Danjiangkou Reservoir, at the start of the central route, located in central China&rsquo;s Hubei province, is badly polluted as the five rivers flowing into it are routinely used as dumping grounds for untreated sewage by local industries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2013-11-27\/pollution-threatens-china-s-ambitious-water-transfer-project\">China&rsquo;s Ministry of Environmental Protection acknowledged in November.<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\n&ldquo;China tries to solve its water shortage problem by diverting water, but such a way is, to some extent, now mired in difficulties,&rdquo; Qiu writes.<\/p>\n<p>Qiu also warns that there will be more water crisis in China if it sticks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadialogue.net\/article\/5128-China-s-South-North-water-transfer-is-irrational-\">South-North Water Diversion Project<\/a>. He says China is now in a &ldquo;critical&rdquo; period to address water pollution issues as the country continues to urbanise.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If we miss the opportunity to repair water ecology, we will pay dearly,&rdquo; he writes. &ldquo;If we try to solve our water crisis by diverting water, then new ecological problems will emerge.
