{"id":31843,"date":"2014-03-21T16:01:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-21T16:01:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-05-14T18:44:20","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T18:44:20","slug":"6843-un-warns-of-energy-and-water-dilemma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/energy\/6843-un-warns-of-energy-and-water-dilemma\/","title":{"rendered":"UN warns of energy and water dilemma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>\n \n  Normal\n  0\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  false\n  false\n  false\n  \n  EN-US\n  ZH-CN\n  X-NONE\n  \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n  \n  \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n  \n<\/xml><![endif]--><span> Water resources are not regarded as seriously as energy<\/span> and are being poorly managed, <span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0022\/002257\/225741E.pdf\">says a report published by the UN<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><span>The report says the interdependence of water and energy is also under-appreciated. For example, mining one tonne of coal uses between 0.2 and 3 cubic metres of water, while <\/span>p<span>urifying one cubic metre of fresh water to drinking water uses 0.37 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity or 2.58 to 8.5 kWh of electricity for converting sea water.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>For China the energy-water issue is particularly acute. A Greenpeace report from 2012, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadialogue.net\/blog\/5107-Thirsty-new-coal-bases-to-trigger-water-crisis-in-China-s-north-west-\/en\">Thirsty Coal<\/a>, pointed out the high water use of coal-mining in the water-scarce north-west of the country. Li Shuo, climate and energy campaigner with Greenpeace, said that the total water consumption of 16 of China&rsquo;s major coal mining centres was equivalent to one sixth of the Yellow River. <\/p>\n<p>LIkewise, coal to gas projects in China &#8211;&nbsp;<\/span><span><span> largely in arid and semi-arid regions of Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang &#8211;<\/span> have also been criticised. Media reports have pointed out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadialogue.net\/blog\/6467-Can-gas-from-coal-ever-be-clean-\/en\">synthetic gas projects produce polluted waste water<\/a> and are inefficient as the gas has to be delivered long distances to the east of China. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span>Zhang Weidong, head of the UNDP&rsquo;s Energy and Environment Office, told <em>chinadialogue<\/em> that manufacturers needed to take the issue of water scarcity more seriously.<\/span> <span>He said the water crisis facing the world means &ldquo;companies need to carry out water risk evaluations as soon as possible.&rdquo; He said <\/span><span>that a project with Coca Cola had seen the company provide  water it did not need at its Guangxi factory to local farmers&rsquo;  cooperatives during the dry season. <\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--[if gte mso 9]><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]>\n\n\n<style>\n \/* Style Definitions *\/\n
