{"id":32913,"date":"2015-05-19T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-19T09:30:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-11-11T14:13:19","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T14:13:19","slug":"7913-glacier-collapse-swallows-up-homes-in-xinjiang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/7913-glacier-collapse-swallows-up-homes-in-xinjiang\/","title":{"rendered":"Glacier collapse swallows up homes in Xinjiang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A big breakaway chunk of a glacier in Xinjiang province has slid down a mountainside, destroying precious farming land, demolishing 70 homes and killing dozens of cattle.<\/p>\n<p>The destructive wall of ice is a foretaste of much worse to come if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1631071313000308\">climate change speeds up melting of China\u2019s icebound regions<\/a>, scientists say.<\/p>\n<p>The fragmented glacier forms part of the Kunlun mountain range that runs along the northern edge of the Tibetan plateau, an area that scientists say is particularly vulnerable to forecast big changes in the world&#8217;s weather.<\/p>\n<div>Li Zhongqin, head of the Chinese Academy of Science\u2019s Tianshan Mountains Glacier Observation Station, told Chinese media that glaciers are moving more freely because of warmer temperatures.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Datasets from 90 meteorological stations in Xinjiang show average temperatures have increased by 1.4C since the 1960s, two times the global average.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The figures also show that over the last 100 years, surface temperatures in Xinjiang have increased by an average of more than 0.8C.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>High levels of precipitation in the area increased pressure on the head of the glacier, while warmer conditions lower down caused a glacier surge \u2013 a particular type of movement that often results in flooding. Surges occur when the base of a glacier starts to slide, triggered by either by a warming climate or an earthquake. In this case, movement at the foot of the glacier prompted a collapse higher up.<\/p>\n<p>China has lost about <a href=\"https:\/\/westdc.westgis.ac.cn\/archives\/news\/featured\/archive-127.html\">18% of its glaciers<\/a> in its western regions since the late 1950s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/china\/2014-12\/17\/content_19108460.htm\">an inventory<\/a> by the Chinese Academy of Sciences revealed last year. The national survey showed that glaciers have been retreating at a rate of 240 square kilometres every year. Glaciers near the Altai mountains in Xinjiang and Gangdise mountains on the Tibetan plateau are the ones most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/china\/2014-12\/17\/content_19108460.htm\">rapidly melting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These glaciers are often described as the \u2018water tower of Asia\u2019, because they are the source of the region\u2019s 10 major river systems that provide water for 1.3 billion people.<\/p>\n<p>In the short term glacier melt will increase flooding, but in the future rivers may dry up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/china\/2014-12\/17\/content_19108460.htm\">scientists have warned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The local county government has sent a survey team to the source of the collapse. According to initial calculations, the breakaway glacier fragment is 20 kilometres long with an average width of one kilometre, and a depth of 30 to 50 metres, packing a total volume of approximately 500 million cubic metres of ice.<\/p>\n<div>Li says the latest remote sensing data shows the breakaway glacier is a simultaneous glacier surge and ice collapse. Such sudden movements are rare in Xinjiang, he says, and this serves as a good case study of glacier change.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>&#8216;White hat&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>When the climate warms, Li says, ice at the bottom of a glacier is more likely to melt, while precipitation accumulating on the surface creates more pressure. In the case of the Kongur glacier, the high-reaching head collapsed when the bottom of the glacier surged downwards.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The foot of the glacier, seated at an altitude of between 2,700 to 2,800 metres, has been observed to be receding in recent years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Li found from satellite images that sometime between March 20 and April 28, the glacier surged forward 180 metres. However, Li says, the specific time, location and volume of the surge needs to be determined through on-site surveys and comparisons with satellite data.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Reaching a height of 7,530 metres, Kongur is capped with snow year-round \u2013 its name translates as \u2018white hat\u2019, and its appearance mimics the white headgear favoured by local herders.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a
