Pakistani politicians have a colourful arsenal of metaphors to describe the strength of their friendship with China:\u00a0higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the oceans, stronger than steel, dearer than eyesight, sweeter than honey, and so on.<\/p>\n

The US$46 billion (306 billion yuan)\u00a0China Pakistan Economic Corridor was expected to\u00a0cement these bonds and prove a \u201cgame changer\u201d for the troubled region. But a year after launch the\u00a0initiative is struggling with security concerns and pressure on scarce natural resources in the arid region.<\/p>\n
