{"id":34611,"date":"2017-02-15T10:53:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T10:53:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-07-15T15:57:02","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T15:57:02","slug":"9611-southeast-asia-is-in-the-grip-of-a-biodiversity-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/nature\/9611-southeast-asia-is-in-the-grip-of-a-biodiversity-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Southeast Asia is in the grip of a biodiversity crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Rich in wildlife, Southeast Asia includes at least six of the world\u2019s 25 \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v403\/n6772\/pdf\/403853a0.pdf\">biodiversity hotspots<\/a>\u201d \u2013 the areas of the world that contain an exceptional concentration of species, and are exceptionally endangered. The region contains 20% of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unu.edu\/publications\/articles\/unraveling-the-drivers-of-southeast-asia-biodiversity-loss.html#info\">planet\u2019s vertebrate and plant species<\/a>\u00a0and the world\u2019s third-largest tropical forest.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">In addition to this existing biodiversity, the region has an\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/publications\/hidden-himalayas-asia-s-wonderland\">extraordinary rate of species discovery<\/a>, with more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/what_we_do\/where_we_work\/greatermekong\/discovering_the_greater_mekong\/species\/\">2,216 new species described<\/a>\u00a0between 1997 and 2014 alone.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Global comparisons are difficult but it seems the Mekong region has a higher rate of species discovery than other parts of the tropics, with hundreds of new species\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/what_we_do\/where_we_work\/greatermekong\/discovering_the_greater_mekong\/species\/new_species\/species_oddity\/\">described annually<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Habitat loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Southeast Asia\u2019s biodiversity is under serious threat; some parts of the region are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grida.no\/products.aspx?m=23&amp;amid=571\">projected to lose up to 98%<\/a>\u00a0of their remaining forests in the next nine years. It\u2019s also thought to be the world\u2019s most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/322\/5899\/225\">threatened region for mammals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Sadly, the region\u2019s fragile biodiversity is frequently forgotten by the global media. It also suffers lower publishing rates than other tropical regions for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lkcnhm.nus.edu.sg\/nus\/pdf\/PUBLICATION\/Raffles%20Bulletin%20of%20Zoology\/Supplements\/Supplement%2025\/s25rbz029-036.pdf\">ecology and biodiversity research<\/a>. It\u2019s perhaps no surprise, then, that Southeast Asia has some of the highest rates of deforestation on the planet, having lost\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/108\/12\/5127.short\">14.5% of forests in the last 15 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Some areas, such as Philippines, have lost up to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rainforests.mongabay.com\/deforestation\/archive\/Philippines.htm\">89% of their original forest cover<\/a>. This loss is rendered especially stark using recent advances in satellite imagery, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/timemachine.cmucreatelab.org\/wiki\/EarthEngineTourEditor\">Google Earth timelapse<\/a>, which shows that many regions have been transformed from pristine forest to agriculture within the last decade or two.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Forest loss is one of the major drivers of species loss in the region, and pulp-paper, rubber and oil palm production are the main drivers of forest clearance. Southeast Asia exports\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atlas.media.mit.edu\/profile\/hs\/1511\/\">86% of the world\u2019s palm oil<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/publications\/rubber-plantations-expand-in-mountainous-southeast-asia-what-are-the-consequences-the-e\">87% of the world\u2019s natural rubber<\/a>. The areas where these grow are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/conl.12170\/full\">projected to expand<\/a>\u00a0by over 4.3 to 8.5 million hectares to meet demand by 2024.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Most new plantations come directly from rainforest clearance, and companies investing in Southeast Asia are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.banktrack.org\/?p=522\">ranked as the least sustainable globally<\/a>. The recently created\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forestsandfinance.org\/\">Forest &amp; Finance initiative<\/a>\u00a0has reported that investment in \u201chigh deforestation risk\u201d sectors in Southeast Asia was more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forestsandfinance.org\/\">US$38.76 billion between 2010 and 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-25f7b7a7-4156-728e-6dad-1f6b73cbde87\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/chinadialogue-production.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/2227\/GP01YG1_meitu_1.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/151688\/width754\/image-20170104-18656-zk6l2u.jpg\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"caption\">Palm oil production in Kalimantan, Indonesia. At 61.1 million tonnes,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmoilandfood.eu\/en\/palm-oil-consumption\">palm oil was the most consumed oil globally<\/a>\u00a0in 2015, and this figure is rising. Certification aiming to prevent further deforestation and guarantee the sustainability of certified palm oil has also proven difficult, and failed to halt deforestation.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">The two initiatives for certification of sustainable palm-oil production and natural rubber \u2013 the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2015\/11\/greenwashing-rspo-audits-rife-with-mistakes-and-fraud-report-finds\/\">Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil<\/a>\u00a0and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifor.org\/publications\/pdf_files\/WPapers\/WP207CIFOR.pdf\">green rubber initiatives<\/a>\u201d \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.culturalsurvival.org\/news\/campaign-update-rspo-failing-its-mandate-regulate-palm-oil-industry\">have failed to fulfil their commitments<\/a>\u00a0to protect natural habitats.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">New plantations have continued to drive destruction of natural rainforests, and the species dependent upon these ecosystems for survival. In some cases, the initiatives have ended up using \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1364815215001024\">perverse incentives<\/a>\u201d which actually encourage deforestation. These include subsidies that facilitate forest clearance by funding conversion of forest to crops, or free provision of rubber seeds to replace natural forests.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Dams, wetlands and mining<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Deforestation is not the only driver of habitat loss in the region; Southeast Asia also has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00027-014-0377-0\">more dams planned than any other part of the planet<\/a>. Though often looked at as \u201cgreen power\u201d, dams lead to a loss of biodiversity and undermine rural economies through the loss of livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">There are currently\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/109\/15\/5609.full\">78 dams planned<\/a>\u00a0for the Mekong Delta. If built, they are projected to reduce the number of migratory fish by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/109\/15\/5609.full\">20% to 70% in the Mekong<\/a>, in addition to flooding essential habitats and causing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/asia\/southeast-asia\/arti%20cle\/1932944\/chinese-dams-blamed-exacerbating-sou%20theast-asian-drought\">regional droughts<\/a>. The Mekong has the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrcsummit.org\/presentations\/track2\/4.2-d-fish-biodiversity-in-LMB-NamSo.pdf\">highest freshwater diversity in the world<\/a>, and the potential extinction of so many species represents a global catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/banyan\/2012\/07\/mekong-river\">Fisheries on the Mekong<\/a><\/span>\u00a0are also projected to feed more than 65 million people. Declines in fish stocks will have direct implications for incomes and diets across the region.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/chinadialogue-production.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/2230\/3173948183_0941f45cc0_b_meitu_2.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/151795\/width754\/image-20170105-18650-1yfvryt.jpg\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"caption\">Fisheries on the Mekong are projected to feed more than 65 million people. (Image by\u00a0<a title=\"Go to Anguskirk's photostream\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/anguskirk\/3173948183\/in\/photolist-p4XA7Y-e1i9Z1-nYb558-cAjFHy-4JBK5e-5QxwU9-5QthKi-5Qtjdx-5QxxyA-ofEgGa-c9bZks-nYaYDC\" data-rapid_p=\"85\" data-track=\"attributionNameClick\">Anguskirk<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The drainage of Asia\u2019s wetlands presents a further set of dangers, particularly due to their importance to more than\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eaaflyway.net\/wwf-hong-kong-has-just-released-a-report-entitled-prioritizing-migratory-shorebirds-for-conservation-action-on-the-east-asian-australasian-flyway\/\">50 million migratory wading birds<\/a>\u00a0that depend on them for migration and breeding.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Around 80% of Southeast Asian wetlands are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awsassets.wwfhk.panda.org\/downloads\/wwf_prioritization_finalpdf.pdf\">threatened by conversion to agricultural land or development<\/a>\u00a0by drainage. Up to 45% of intertidal wetlands have already been lost. This has so far caused population reductions of up to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bio-nica.info\/biblioteca\/Delany2006-1.pdf\">79% in some wading species<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Mining is another often overlooked issue that poses a significant threat to biodiversity, especially to karsts (limestone outcrops and caves), which cover around\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bioscience.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/56\/9\/733.full\">800,000<\/a>\u00a0square kilometres of Southeast Asia. Each of these ecosystems are known to harbour more than ten\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/www.hawaii.edu\/cowielab\/tentacle\/tentacle_16.pdf\">species not found anywhere else on the planet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">But most of these sites have never been surveyed, and up to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rufford.org\/files\/40.11.06%20Detailed%20Final%20Report.doc\">90% of cave species<\/a>\u00a0in China are estimated to be scientifically undescribed.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1365-2664.2009.01630.x\/pdf\">Similar rates of unclassification<\/a>\u00a0are likely to exist for the rest of the region.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">These karst ecosystems are under serious threat. Cement comes directly from karst ecosystems, and between 2011 and 2013 alone, China used more cement (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2015\/03\/24\/how-china-used-more-cement-in-3-years-than-the-u-s-did-in-the-entire-20th-century\/\">6.6 gigatonnes<\/a>) than the US has in recorded history. China\u2019s approximate annual usage of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemnet.com\/Articles\/story\/149175\/china-ready-for-a-new-era-.html\">1.5 tonnes<\/a>\u00a0per capita amounts to over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cornerstonemag.net\/the-rise-and-potential-peak-of-cement-demand-in-the-urbanized-world\/\">60% of the global cement demand annually<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">As karsts are under-represented in protected areas \u2013 and given the majority of karst-dwelling species are limited to a single site \u2013 there is no way of knowing how many species go extinct annually as a consequence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Hunting and trade<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Another threat to the region\u2019s biodiversity is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-elgar.com\/shop\/handbook-of-transnational-environmental-crime\">illegal wildlife trade<\/a>. Worth approximately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/01639625.2010.483162\">US$20 billion annually<\/a>, it\u2019s the fourth-biggest illegal trade in the world.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">In Southeast Asia, hunting represents the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320715001548\">greatest threat to the future survival<\/a>\u00a0of many species, with few native mammals of over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/cobi.12785\/full\">two kilogrammes surviving outside protected areas<\/a>. Hunting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/3\/10\/160498.abstract\">represents<\/a>\u00a0a threat to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/store\/10.1111\/cobi.12785\/asset\/supinfo\/cobi12785-sup-0001-text.pdf?v=1&amp;s=4e31b7b5763c486c51653b7b029810d1e51c2c26\">all species<\/a>, with high-value species sought and traded by criminal cartels and smaller species traded for medicine, food or sport.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Trade in wildlife in Asia can be grouped into three main types: for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Roger_Byard\/publication\/291419297_Traditional_medicines_and_species_extinction_another_side_to_forensic_wildlife_investigation\/links\/56a7f24508ae0fd8b3fe43de.pdf\">medicinal purposes<\/a>, for status (either in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1057\/9781137408020_3#page-1\">wildlife restaurants or as ornaments<\/a>) or for the pet, zoo and aquarium trades (principally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320715001548\">birds<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320716301987\">reptiles and amphibians<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874116314684\">Traditional medicine<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in Vietnam and China represents a threat to a huge array of species, but most notably the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2351989416300798\">pangolin<\/a>, which is the most trafficked animal on the planet. Sadly, the use of endangered species in medicine shows\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficchina.org\/sites\/default\/files\/briefing_paper_of_pangolin_trade.pdf\">little sign of abating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/chinadialogue-production.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/content_image\/content_image\/2233\/9449651631_f9d0a70120_z.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/62e528761d0685343e1c-f3d1b99a743ffa4142d9d7f1978d9686.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com\/files\/151685\/width754\/image-20170104-18659-wchj80.jpg\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"caption\">Pangolins are the most trafficked animal on the planet. And a number are now facing extinction.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">The pet and zoo trade in wildlife, especially for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg14119102-300\/\">reptiles, amphibians<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/orientalbirdclub.org\/2016\/05\/25\/trade-wiping-out-indonesias-bird-species\/\">birds<\/a>, have recently received attention, as many species formerly thought to be captive-bred are now known to be wild-caught. They have suffered serious population declines as a result of exploitation for trade.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">The unique biodiversity of Southeast Asia is under threat because of some of the world\u2019s highest rates of habitat loss, as well as direct over-exploitation of species. Even when forests remain intact, they are being steadily\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/1\/4\/e1400103.short\">emptied of their biodiversity<\/a>\u00a0through hunting.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-fa6f0302-4156-f44b-9605-c1304e390ba0\">Though dedicated researchers and conservationists are working to prevent these issues, Southeast Asia will see the extinction of many endemic species in the coming decades.
