{"id":36485,"date":"2019-09-02T10:02:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T10:02:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-06-22T15:49:01","modified_gmt":"2020-06-22T15:49:01","slug":"11485-asia-pacific-climate-week-kicks-off-in-bangkok-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/11485-asia-pacific-climate-week-kicks-off-in-bangkok-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Asia-Pacific Climate Week kicks off in Bangkok"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Participants at this week\u2019s Asia-Pacific Climate Week (APCW), which runs from 2-6 September in\u00a0Bangkok, are hoping it will\u00a0build momentum on climate action ahead of the New York climate summit later this month and the UN climate talks in Chile in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBangkok\u2019s APCW will gather thousands of stakeholders from the region to exchange their real experiences and best practices on climate action, which will be a significant input for New York\u2019s Climate Summit,\u201d said UNFCCC\u2019s Jens Rodschinski, head of the Regional Collaboration Centre in Bangkok.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised that the talks will be on \u201chow to translate climate commitments into action\u201d, so that meaningful commitments can be made at the UN talks in Chile. \u201cToday\u2019s issue for climate action is how to make it faster. We don\u2019t want [climate actions] in 2050, we need them now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2>Paying for climate change<\/h2>\n<p>The urgency of climate change action was emphasised in the August release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unescap.org\/publications\/asia-pacific-disaster-report-2019\">Asia-Pacific Disaster Report 2019<\/a>. It noted that disaster risks in the Asia-Pacific region will be \u201cgrowing in intensity, frequency and complexity\u201d, and \u201cexceeding the region\u2019s capacity to respond\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2018, almost half of the 281 natural disaster events worldwide occurred in the region, including eight out of the ten deadliest. An average of 142 million people in the region have been affected annually since 1970, well above the global average of 38 million,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>It put the economic costs of such natural disaster events in the region at US$675 billion annually, or around 2.4% of the region\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n<h2>High expectations<\/h2>\n<p>Asia Pacific Climate Week is one of three regional climate platforms organised annually, with\u00a0the other two\u00a0concerning Africa and Latin America. It\u2019s a place where grassroots organisations, local communities, NGOs, policymakers, academia and businesses can exchange views, according to UNFCCC\u2019s Rodschinski.<\/p>\n<p>The Bangkok discussions will focus on five areas: energy and industry transition, infrastructure, cities and local action, resilience and adaptation, and nature-based solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201chigh-level segment\u201d\u00a0of APCW will be attended by senior government\u00a0and UN officials, including <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/8447-un-oceans-envoy-we-have-a-recipe-for-humanitys-survival\/\">Peter Thomson<\/a>, the United Nations special envoy for the ocean.<\/p>\n<h2>Local participants<\/h2>\n<p>Wanan Permpiboon, coordinator of Climate Watch Thailand, says the group will be focusing on Chinese investment, especially in stranded coal assets and subsidies. The nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of ASEAN countries will also be considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many innovations that need to be scaled up to reach the Paris Agreement and increase ambition in NDCs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kollawat Sakhaakara of the Thailand Office of Natural Resource and Environment Policy and Planning expects to discuss how to achieve Thailand\u2019s NDCs efficiently. Thailand committed under the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gases by 20% by 2030. Since Thailand faces significant risks from climate change, he\u2019ll also be focused on discussions around adaptation and mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>APCW is smaller than the other regional events but growing in popularity according to Rodschinski. There are 1,100 registered participants so far, but this could reach some 1,500. \u201cThis is already exponential growth compared to the past year for APCW,\u201d he
