{"id":50047711,"date":"2021-10-27T15:38:36","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T14:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stage.dialogochino.net\/?p=47711"},"modified":"2023-02-28T21:18:16","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T21:18:16","slug":"47711-amazonia-sebastiao-salgado-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/forests\/47711-amazonia-sebastiao-salgado-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Amaz\u00f4nia: Spectacular Salgado exhibition inspires awe and action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A deep focus shot of forest so dense, and in such high contrast black-and-white that it appears to move, greets visitors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemuseum.org.uk\/see-and-do\/amazonia\">Amaz\u00f4nia<\/a>, the truly absorbing exhibition by renowned Brazilian photographer Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado, recently opened at London\u2019s Science Museum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47718\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47718\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47718\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mont-Roraima_2560px-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Mount Roraima\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mount Roraima, Roraima state, Brazil, 2018 (Image \u00a9 Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado\/nbpictures)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In parts, Amazon tributaries etch smooth curves through forest with pendulum-like swings. In others, punctures, or <em>furos<\/em>, of separate bodies of water form straight stretches and sharper turns. Stunning high-angle shots of jigsaw-piece-shaped meanderings give a sense of less predictable movements.<\/p>\n<p>Amaz\u00f4nia documents much more than the running rivers in Brazil that serve as the wider biome\u2019s lifeblood. There are also its \u201cflying rivers\u201d \u2013 billions of tons of transpired water vapour flowing in aerial currents. There are table-top mountains. And there is rain: rain in grainy torrents; in the form of white curtains; and in cylindrical dumps that appear to prop up mushroom clouds. Yet, this rainfall is increasingly irregular because of deforestation and wider climate change.<\/p>\n<p>As well as mesmerising geography and biodiversity, Amaz\u00f4nia depicts some of the hundreds of groups of indigenous peoples that inhabit and sustain what Salgado calls \u201cparadise\u201d. Among them, the muscular Kuikuro fishers, who live in the <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.dialogochino.net\/en\/agriculture\/agro-industry-surrounds-xingu-indigenous-territory\/\">Xingu reserve<\/a>, and the Zo\u2019\u00e9, which means \u201cI am me\u201d. The phrase equates to \u201cwe are people\u201d and is thought to have its roots in their attempts to communicate humanness to outsiders during first contact. The Zo\u2019\u00e9 survived the arrival of Christian missions in the 1980s, as well as the decimation of their living area by the rubber industry.<\/p>\n<div class='cdo-shortcode--image'>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47715\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47715\" style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47715 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Chaman-Yanomami_2560px-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"A Yanomami shaman performs a ritual at the Pico da Neblina hill, \" width=\"2000\" height=\"1463\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Yanomami shaman performs a ritual at the Pico da Neblina hill, 2014 (Image \u00a9\ufe0f Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado\/nbpictures)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/div>Salgado is as well-known for his activism to protect Brazil\u2019s forests and indigenous people as he is for his high-contrast monochrome shots. Fittingly, Amaz\u00f4nia brings the majesty of the planet\u2019s lungs to a wider audience as it faces today\u2019s threats of logging, mining and <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.dialogochino.net\/en\/topics\/agriculture\/\">agriculture<\/a> \u2013 and a climatic tipping point.<\/p>\n<p>Though sponsorship for the Salgado exhibition comes from other sources, the Science Museum has recently come under fire from campaigners, who accuse it of allowing oil company Shell to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/science-museum-gagged-by-sponsorship-deal-with-shell-58dt00kgr\">greenwash<\/a>\u201d its high-emitting operations by sponsoring exhibits on proposed technologies that capture and remove carbon from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>While it is at risk of destruction and ceasing to properly function, the most efficient such technology is put vividly on display at Amaz\u00f4nia \u2013 the forest itself.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemuseum.org.uk\/see-and-do\/amazonia\">Amaz\u00f4nia<\/a> by Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado is on show at London\u2019s Science Museum until March 2022, with future exhibitions planned at SESC in S\u00e3o Paulo and the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro; see website for further
