But the country has now managed to position itself as a major player in the global market, and become the world\u2019s leading blueberry exporter.<\/p>\n<div class='block--pullout-stat block--pullout-stat--float cd-shortcode--factbox'>\n                <p class='block--pullout-stat__title'>28%<\/p>\n                <div class='block--pullout-stat__content'>\n                    <br \/>\nPeru\u2019s blueberry exports in the 2022-23 season are expected to grow by 28% on last year, according to the Association of Blueberry Producers of Peru<br \/>\n\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe growth has been truly exponential and a lot of labour has been generated along the way,\u201d said Alfredo Lira Chirif, an agronomist and general manager of Agr\u00edcola Cerro Prieto, one of the main blueberry exporters in La Libertad, a department in the country\u2019s north that is responsible for more shipments than any other, according to the Association of Blueberry Producers of Peru (Proar\u00e1ndanos).<\/p>\n<p>Nationwide, the association estimates that the 2022-23 season will close with shipments of 285,000 tonnes, a 28% increase on last year\u2019s output.<\/p>\n<p>But as the Peruvian blueberry industry continues to expand, it faces increasing challenges to remain sustainable, chief among them confronting the issue of water scarcity, as well as price reductions due to increased supply and insufficient labour.<\/p>\n<h2>Climbing the rankings<\/h2>\n<p>The continued growth of the Peruvian blueberry contrasts with the situation in neighbouring Chile \u2013 its main competitor in the region. Between January and August 2022 alone, there was a 6% drop in exports compared to the previous period, according to its Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (ODEPA).<\/p>\n<p>The two nation\u2019s differing fortunes have partly arisen due to logistical difficulties Chilean producers have faced in recent times, according to Christian Seydewitz, senior vice-president for Chile of the shipping company Hapag Lloyd. \u201cThere is a serious shortage of space on ships, which is driving the increase in prices and the current scenario,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portalfruticola.com\/noticias\/2022\/04\/28\/las-frustraciones-aumentan-mientras-los-transportistas-maritimos-se-aprovechan-de-la-crisis-logistica\/\">Portalfruticola<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But various other factors have allowed Peru to rise to overtake its southern neighbour and become the world\u2019s leading exporter of fresh blueberries. Initially, there was an attractive commercial window that the country identified in the northern hemisphere, particularly in the American market.<div class='cdo-shortcode--image'><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"flourish-embed-iframe\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px;\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/11598375\/embed\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/div>The US remains one of the world\u2019s top overall producers of blueberries, with the majority of its production destined for domestic consumption. However, as Luis Miguel Vegas, general manager of Proar\u00e1ndanos, told Di\u00e1logo Chino, \u201cThere was no consistent supply of berries for the northern hemisphere, especially in autumn and winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With little supply, growers were getting a higher price for the berry. \u201cThat helped growth to be rapid because prices in that window were high,\u201d Alfredo Lira added.<\/p>\n<p>Other factors that contributed to the growth of the Peruvian sector were the increased genetic development of varieties and favourable climatic conditions for production. \u201cThe climate in the producing areas is quite temperate, which ensures good quality and early production of blueberries,\u201d said Vega. \u201cThe country\u2019s international agreements have also been important in encouraging exports. Peru&#8217;s National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa) has been important in opening up new markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These drivers have made it possible for the Peruvian blueberry to reach different continents and begin to position itself in countries such as China \u2013 itself a notable producer.<\/p>\n<p>According to Proar\u00e1ndanos estimates, at the end of the 2021-22 season, China accounted for a 12% share of Peruvian exports, placing it in third position. For the 2022-23 season, it is expected to represent 14% of shipments by volume.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60109\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/agriculture\/12287-avocado-boom-wreaks-havoc-on-latin-americas-environment\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60109\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/arbol-avocado_Flickr_Kevin-Brown.jpg\" alt=\"avocado tree\" width=\"350\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/agriculture\/12287-avocado-boom-wreaks-havoc-on-latin-americas-environment\/\">Avocado boom wreaks havoc on Latin America&#8217;s environment<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt is the destination that has been growing the most in percentage terms,\u201d said Vega, who also highlighted the potential in the Chinese market.<\/p>\n<p>Liang Yu, the Chinese ambassador to Peru, has himself talked of a great demand in the country for newer exports such as blueberries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a market of 1.4 billion people, the demand for typical Peruvian confectionery with local inputs is going to be well received. Quinoa, avocado and blueberries will continue to be the preferred foods,\u201d the ambassador was <a href=\"https:\/\/mineriaenergia.com\/liang-yu-las-bambas-no-esta-dispuesta-a-dar-mas-dinero-a-las-comunidades\/\">quoted<\/a> as saying in June this year.<\/p>\n<p>Agr\u00edcola Cerro Prieto\u2019s Lira said Chinese consumers are demanding and placing greater value by aspects such as size, flavour and a higher Brix score \u2013 which indicates higher concentrations of natural sugar, mineral content, antioxidants, and other vitamins. Lira also pointed to advantages for the Peruvian industry in its knowledge and experience of producing quality crops that are uniform in the desired characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market wants homogenous quality,\u201d Lira said, adding that the Chinese consumer values large, sweet fruit. The potential for growth in this market is enormous as, Lira reports, per capita consumption of blueberries in Asia is around 30 g per year, while in the United States \u2013 an already established market \u2013 it reaches 2.5 kg per capita. \u201cIt is important to have varieties that meet these attributes and that can sustain the shipments to China,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2>Sustainable growth<\/h2>\n<p>As it looks to grow further while meeting the demands of new consumers, Peru\u2019s blueberry industry faces challenges to remain sustainable, in water scarcity, sustaining prices and meeting labour requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9s Mujica, president of the sustainability committee of the Association of Peruvian Agricultural Producers\u2019 Guilds (AGAP), highlighted that the expansion of customer bases and markets has created great demands in terms of water footprint and pesticide use.<\/p>\n<p>Increased restrictions in different markets on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/fao-who-codexalimentarius\/codex-texts\/maximum-residue-limits\/es\/#:~:text=Un%20l%C3%ADmite%20m%C3%A1ximo%20de%20residuos,a%20las%20buenas%20pr%C3%A1cticas%20agr%C3%ADcolas.\">maximum residue limits<\/a> \u2013 the maximum level of pesticides tolerated on crops \u2013 and the search for more attractive prices have pushed Peruvian companies to opt for organic production, which already accounts for around 11% of the fresh blueberries produced in the country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25104\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25104\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/agriculture\/25098-chilean-cherry-producers-adapt-to-climate-change\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25104\" src=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/chile-cherry.jpg\" alt=\"person harvesting cherries\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/agriculture\/25098-chilean-cherry-producers-adapt-to-climate-change\/\">Chilean cherry producers adapt to climate change<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Santiago G\u00f3mez, who has co-authored <a href=\"https:\/\/repositorioacademico.upc.edu.pe\/handle\/10757\/623455\">research<\/a> on fumigation of blueberry crops, told Di\u00e1logo Chino that since 2017, there have been increased efforts to seek the best practices to reduce the presence of chemicals in the production process. His work has investigated the use of drones as an innovative technology for the fumigation of crop fields, although several limitations remain to their broader use. These include limited flight times of due to battery life and, primarily, the limited capacity of water tanks.<\/p>\n<p>Another challenge for the sector is linked to the development of efficient solutions for organic producers, which is still a nascent niche in Peru. \u201cNot much progress has been made in biological [pest] control,\u201d Jos\u00e9 Villacorta Ch\u00e1vez, a researcher who has studied <a href=\"https:\/\/dspace.unitru.edu.pe\/handle\/UNITRU\/10076#:~:text=Los%20indicadores%20emerg%C3%A9ticos%20demostraron%20que,Chao%20no%20es%20sostenible%20ambientalmente.\">blueberry sustainability in La Libertad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The prevalence of sandy soils in Peru and the higher cost of organic production on them also present challenges. \u201cIn conventional agriculture, the plant is constantly being fertilised. However, in organic agriculture, when the aim is to nourish the plant, this is done through soil fertilisation,\u201d agricultural consultant Antonio Gaete explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redagricola.com\/pe\/muchas-veces-el-error-esta-en-decidirse-por-pasar-a-organico-el-predio-sector-o-el-cuartel-mas-malo-productivamente-hablando\/\">Redagr\u00edcola<\/a>. \u201cTherefore, as the soils are mostly of a poor quality, it will be very difficult to achieve this fertilisation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Villacorta explained that there are agrochemical companies that are researching liquid fertilisation, a process by which fertilisers dissolved in water are applied directly to the crop. However, these have not yet achieved the desired results.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking to technology<\/h2>\n<p>In an arena of increased international competition, Peruvian agro-exporters have sought to differentiate themselves by becoming more cost-efficient and investing in more sustainable technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of organic blueberries and we are trying to innovate in terms of organic fertilisation. We are getting stronger in our experiments,\u201d said Agr\u00edcola Cerro Prieto\u2019s Lira. He reported that in 2021, the company he represents accessed US$160 million in financing to strengthen its sustainability efforts.<\/p>\n<p>His farm works to measure its carbon footprint, and also has a National Water Authority (ANA) \u201cblue certificate\u201d, a recognition granted by the agency to responsible water users. Lira explains that their system involved the placement of a probe at the stem of each tree to measure water consumption per tree.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We have a lot of organic blueberries and we are trying to innovate in terms of organic fertilisation. We are getting stronger in our experiments<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>AGAP&#8217;s Mujica explained that as Peruvian companies look to expand their production sustainably, some are investing in wastewater treatment projects to avoid overuse and the contamination of the water table. He named Lira\u2019s Agr\u00edcola Cerro Prieto, as well as Agrokasa, Sunfruits and Agr\u00edcola Santa Azul as companies working on such initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of Peru\u2019s blueberry production takes place near the country\u2019s desert coast. For this reason, the main challenge will always be water supply.<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Villacorta said that there is still \u201ca long way to go\u201d in terms of the industry\u2019s water management. \u201cThe country has a lot of water, but they can\u2019t make the right transfers [to areas where it is needed]. I believe that irrigation technology can be more efficient, but the country&#8217;s problem is going to be more about water supply,\u201d he warned. He insisted that it is important to continue building reservoirs.<\/p>\n<p>In the north of the country, the third part of the massive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chavimochic.gob.pe\/\">Chavimochic project<\/a>, a system which hopes to irrigate 160,000 hectares of farmland, has nearly been completed after more than ten years of work.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, some companies are looking to meet the water challenge by exploring the production of potted blueberries instead of soil-grown fruits; although this method requires a higher investment, one of its advantages is that it produces more plants per hectare and consumes less water. According to Agr\u00edcola Cerro Prieto\u2019s Lira, potted production consumes half as much water as conventional production in soil.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a promising, and precipitous, rise for Peru\u2019s blueberry producers in the past decade, but overcoming environmental challenges will be vital if the nation is to consolidate its position as the world\u2019s leading exporter over the medium and long term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearing 300,000 tonnes a year, Peru now exports more blueberries than any other country.
