Kanchan cares for her husband and two children in a single-room house with brick walls and a metal-sheet roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By day, the room is a kitchen and living space. At night it becomes the family\u2019s bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work here in Savda Ghevra, a settlement on the north-west edge of Delhi, starts at 6am when she cooks for her husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the afternoon, when the building\u2019s tin roof is taking the full force of the harsh afternoon sun, she is still going, making fresh rotis for her children returning from school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last September, a thermal camera I brought into Kanchan\u2019s house recorded surface temperatures of 36.5C as she went about her afternoon work \u2013 and that was already past the worst of summer. This May, the outdoor<\/a> temperatures in the city reached<\/a> almost 45C and the night passed 32C \u2013 the hottest night Delhi had recorded in 14 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMein nahi karungi toh aur kaun khaana banayega?<\/em>\u201d she says. \u201cIf I don’t cook, who else will?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Night brings little relief. \u201cEven around the time we are trying to sleep, it feels like it\u2019s still afternoon,\u201d Kanchan says. Her son wants an air conditioner, but she asks: \u201cWhere will the money come from, and besides, this house is too small.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 50 km away east of Savda Ghevra is Kishan Kunj. Most families in this settlement have migrated from other states and earn a living selling used clothes and utensils. Reshma and Manisha, two young women caring for their family here, describe the same relentless heat that plagues Kanchan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their home lacks even the brick walls of Kanchan\u2019s. Its sides are built from woven mats. In the evenings, when outdoor temperatures drop slightly, Reshma and Manisha\u2019s brothers step out to sit and chat with friends or simply be away from the stiflingly hot house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reshma and Manisha stay inside \u2013 women routinely face harassment in public spaces in Indian cities and in informal settlements, street lighting is poor and public spaces are male-dominated through the evening. \u201cIt isn\u2019t safe for us outside, and we don\u2019t really leave the house much anyway,\u201d Reshma says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women in India, regardless of educational qualification or marital status, spend 46%<\/a> of their waking hours on unpaid care work on average \u2013 eight times the hours men spend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s cities are warming and densifying fast. And the women at home are feeling the impact. In many cases they are coming up with their own adaptations as they try to make their lives slightly more bearable. But deeper solutions seem far away, say experts and the women who suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceiling for heat adaptation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

About 40% of India\u2019s urban population lived<\/a> in informal settlements as of 2022. Here protective measures against extreme heat are limited. Electricity to run fridges, fans and coolers is also difficult to access, with connections often informal or shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where supply does reach households, it is frequently unreliable. Two in five urban Indian households face<\/a> unanticipated power outages at least once a day, a figure that could be far higher in low-income, informal settlements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buying and running cooling appliances is often unaffordable. AC prices rose by 5-15%<\/a> just before this summer, and research<\/a> in Mumbai\u2019s informal settlements finds that energy-poor households often refrain from using cooling devices to reign in electricity bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Savda Ghevra, where Kanchan lives, was built for families evicted from informal settlements across Delhi, who were allotted land on which many have gradually constructed permanent houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four years ago, Kanchan bought a refrigerator after saving up some money from a part-time job delivering electricity bills around the city \u2013 work she takes on after completing her caregiving responsibilities. It was an expensive purchase, she says, but a necessary one. Without it, food would spoil quickly, making her already stretched grocery budget even harder to manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond that, her adaptations to heat are smaller and daily: she wakes up earlier to cook; takes breaks every couple of hours; wets a cloth for her head and sits in front of the fan; and drinks buttermilk to rehydrate and keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are not practices she grew up with, she says. But a few years ago, a new building went up next door, cutting off what little air reached her house. \u201cGhutan hone lag gayi thi andar<\/em>. It started feeling suffocating inside.\u201d The adaptations followed. But personal adaptation has a ceiling, and for women that ceiling is often lower than it is for men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe physiology, when it comes to heat, is not very different. The ceiling is the home, the gender, the burdens,\u201d says Robert Meade, a researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the United States. \u201cIt is the cultural norms and social reasons that constrain women\u2019s ability to adapt to heat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he and colleagues were studying women\u2019s heat exposure in Gujarat, a state in western India, they advised taking breaks and not working in the hottest parts of the day. \u201cBut that\u2019s not really an option for them\u201d due to their caregiving responsibilities, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cThink of it as them treading water and you hand over a brick. They won\u2019t drown, but it will make the easiest tasks difficult,\u201d says Meade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four walls and no windows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

About 1,400 km south of Savda Ghevra is the Dharavi Koliwada neighbourhood in Mumbai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By some estimates it is home to one million people, packed into 2.6 sq km. Here the problem of construction takes a different form, but the heat and its consequences again land most heavily on women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The settlement has grown rapidly in recent years, often through the addition of upper floors and subdivision of rooms. This has changed not just how people live but also how air moves \u2013 or does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere used to be a creek here. It was open, there were no tall buildings, and the air would pass,\u201d says Mary, whose family are Koli<\/em>, among the original fishing communities of the area. \u201cNow everything is packed. Everyone now keeps adding newer floors every year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her neighbour Devyani cooks on a gas stove in a kitchen that used to have windows on all of its three external sides but now on all three, there is someone\u2019s wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we break this wall, there’s another house right there, we can\u2019t put in a window, and it\u2019s suffocating,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After cooking she sits in the stairwell of her community building, which is only marginally less hot than the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Mary and Devyani describe an inversion that is now routine, and one that has crept up on them over the years. There was a time when coming home meant stepping into shade and relative cool, when the estuary breeze reached the lanes and the neighbourhood had not been sealed in by concrete on every side. Now, stepping onto the main road brings relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Densification in Dharavi has also turned cooling into a source of neighbourhood strife. Several women describe hot exhaust from wealthier neighbours\u2019 ACs blowing directly into their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe houses are so close that someone\u2019s AC in front of our window blows hot air directly into our house. Par bol nahi sakte kyunki woh paise waale hai<\/em>. We can’t say anything because they’re the ones with money,\u201d Devyani says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to kitchen work, the problems are gendered. Devyani notes with a laugh that her husband has never cooked in their overheating, windowless kitchen. “Lekin aisa bol nahi sakte<\/em>. But you can’t say that out loud,\u201d she jokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem, says Mukta Naik, architect, urban planner, and a fellow at the Sustainable Futures Collaborative, starts with the built environment itself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUrban planning in India has historically not taken women’s use of domestic space seriously. Homes were generally never designed to make domestic labour convenient; the kitchen would often be outside so that smoke could escape. Women\u2019s time spent inside the house is barely ever factored in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improved ventilation would help, she says. Not just cross-ventilation but vertical ventilation that provides escape routes for hot air to rise and exit buildings. \u201cVertical shafts with mechanised exhaust can be put in places where windows and horizontal cross-ventilation is not possible,\u201d Naik explains. It can be retrofitted into existing structures, and would address both heat and indoor air pollution at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passive solutions exist too, requiring no fans or electricity. A 2021 study<\/a> of a one-room low-income home in Andheri East, Mumbai, examined a relatively low-cost fix. Using a computer simulation, researchers tested fitting a small chimney onto the home\u2019s roof, one side painted black to draw heat, the rest translucent to allow light in. The results were promising, with the simulated chimney pulling out enough hot air to drop the room\u2019s temperature by 3C or 4C.

But retrofitting isn’t something the state is likely to lead. These are self-built settlements, Naik points out, and India has a poor track record on informal settlement upgrades of any kind. \u201cThe more realistic path is private, household-level uptake \u2013 people retrofitting their own homes if given technical support and home-improvement finance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsidised cooling devices, standardisation of equipment to bring costs down, and incentives for industries to produce affordable cooling units would also help, Naik says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even within households that do own air conditioning, cooling is not distributed equally.

Mumtaz, resident of a newly renovated house in Savda Ghevra, bought an AC recently as a \u201ca cooler doesn’t work in the monsoon and the body gets sticky\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the unit only runs after her son comes home in the evening, and then through the night. The hours before that, when her daughter-in-law cooks and cleans through the afternoon, are managed without it. Running it longer would cost more than the household can afford. Mumtaz is also matter-of-fact about another reason: the men work hard outside, and the home should be cool when they return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coping where systems don\u2019t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The heat brings not just discomfort. Across Delhi and Mumbai, women describe how prolonged exposure to indoor heat damages their health, but their accumulations of symptoms rarely make it into medical records. Savda Ghevra does not have a public hospital close by. There is a small dispensary, and beyond that one private doctor for families that can afford it.

Reshma says her blood pressure drops while cooking through the hottest parts of the day, causing dizziness and vomiting. Manisha talks about nosebleeds brought on by the heat. Another woman in Mumbai describes waking after a night of disrupted sleep with swollen feet \u2013 one of the ways, she says, she knows the heat has crossed a threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2024 study<\/a> covering 10 Indian cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, found that heatwaves were associated with a 14.7% increase in daily mortality, and estimated more than 1,100 heatwave-attributable deaths annually across the study locations. But official mortality data in India is under-reported and poorly tracked<\/a> and fails to capture the morbidity experienced by many women in poor quality urban homes.

A resident, Zarina, describes constantly splashing water on her clothes while cooking to stay cool. But the clothes are a part of the problem. \u201cThe wet clothes have caused rashes all over my body,\u201d she says. Gender norms require her to be fully covered through the day where men routinely wear banians (vests) or go shirtless at home and in shared spaces, especially in summer.

Savita, another woman homemaker in the same area, says she opens the fridge and sits in front of it on hot afternoons. \u201cMy husband scolds me for wasting the cooling,\u201d she laughs, \u201cbut if the fridge were bigger, I would sit inside it.\u201d

India’s indoor heat crisis is being managed, woman by woman, inside houses that trap heat in ways that men rarely experience. It is being managed with wet clothes, with buttermilk, with fans, with a fridge door held open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Kitni bhi garmi ho, koi bina khaye reh sakta hai? <\/em>No matter how hot it gets, can anyone live without eating?\u201d<\/em> says one woman, 80 years old, in Dharavi, who wanted to remain anonymous.\u201cKoi nahi reh sakta. Toh hamein kaam karna hi padhega, kitni bhi garmi ho<\/em>. No one can. And so the work continues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since September 2025, Sonali Verma has been visiting low- and middle-income settlements across Mumbai, Delhi,and Hyderabad, speaking to women homemakers across ages and communities about heat, exhaustion and coping.
